Agreed. Plus we need to learn to stop being such drama queens over every little decision. Just do things and shrug off the complaints - that's what everyone else does. Does anyone remember France's nuclear tests a few years ago in open defiance of the NPA? "Just one more, then we sign what we already agreed to". We would have tied ourselves up in knots in public trying to resolve that one for ourselves, and in the end, no one would have said "boo".

Yeah, who cares about free elections, and not murdering journalists, and not running nationalist youth camps, and not trying to throw what remains of your Cold War weight around like a petulant child...

A Russian once told me: "I think Russia will be fine in seven, eight, or nine... hundred years." Obviously better said orally but you get the point.

I'd personally rather suffer PCness than fascism, as if those are the only two choices.

To be fair (I'm doing this with gritted teeth) you have to admit that there has been no evidence of murdering journalists, and the other two aren't real crimes. Now f*cking over the military reform programs, demolishing what little is left of the Russian Navy, screwing over the RSVN (nuclear forces) and doing little (if anything) substantial to improve the demographic crisis would hit home a bit better.

Feanor, Putin is essentially putting national pride in those things - by definition a hollow thing - above real concerns like demographics, as you said.

Except that admiring Russia for overcoming political correctness is like admiring a nuclear weapon for being more effective than a hand grenade in bringing down a building. The attitude is the first starting point for strongmen and thus dictators.
