Israel Military Industries, IMI, has won an international tender to set up five chemical plants in India worth $ 140 million.

Israel Military Industries, IMI, has won an international tender to set up five chemical plants in India worth $ 140 million, report newswires. The five fully equipped chemical plants to be built over 24 months will be located in Bihar and will develop explosives. IMI beat companies from Europe and the US to win the tender in which it will be the chief contractor supervising two subcontractors - Israel's Bateman Engineering and India's Nicco Corporation.

The plants will operate on the pattern of IMI's chemical plants in Ramat Hasharon in Israel, which serves the company's ammunition plants. The leading Israeli defence industry's ammunitions complex has already set up an administration to manage the Indian project.

"IMI will utilise all its accumulated military industry know-how and capabilities in this deal, while maximising the synergy between the company's core businesses and management of large-scale international projects," Arie Mizrachi, Chairman of IMI was quoted as saying.

This is the second time that the company has won such an international tender as the chief contractor, supervising Israeli and local subcontractors in the target country. IMI is also said to have won a deal worth $ 30-40 million to upgrade rockets for the Indian Army early this month. Earlier, Mizrachi was quoted by business daily Globes as saying that the initial deal has the potential to expand to $ 1 billion mark over a five-year period.

I wonder what type of explosives since manufacturing explosive is already in place. Must be specialised stuff required for Israeli equipment.

If that be the case, why float international tenders, why not bilateral deal?

What if the europeans got the tender? then how it would have been israel specialised?

17 January 2005: India may review three joint ventures with Israel to produce electronic warfare systems, including battlefield communication systems, in Bangalore, Chennai, and Pune.

Initiated after the Kargil War, but speeded up following 9/ 11, by the then defence minister Jaswant Singh, Israel fought off co-developers, Raytheon of the US and certain West-European companies, to jointly produce the EWS systems in India, but defence minister Pranab Mukherjee has expressed reservations about the project.

During tests with these equipment, sitting in a small room in Chandigarh, Indian Air Force and Army officers could monitor every single communication arising out of Pakistan and track every flying object within Pakistani airspace.

“The equipment, of which we needed five to six thousand pieces in variants, would have given us unprecedented C4ISR capability in the battlefield,” said an official, but the defence minister argues that these could get outdated in twenty years time.

Thanks Rahul

Some how the lines "but the defence minister argues that these could get outdated in twenty years time." makes me think twice about the crediblity of the article.

well it wil make sense only if the procurement of these equipments will take 20 years . so by th time they set it up it becomes outdated. or else the article isnt credible
