texasjohn,

hell, i hope better. one of the silver linings of the whole katrina thing is that it gives city planners a "clean" slate to re-design a city based upon modern technology. what they've done so far is a joke.

There is now an Indian American (designate) Governor of a state. Has there ever been an American Indian to have reached that position?

The real take-awa from the whole elction is, as dalem said: merit won out over racism, featherbedded incumbent politicians, and the greatest stink of corruption anywhere in the United States (including New Jersey and Massachusetts!).

They beat him once before by appealing to the baser instincts of the voters. But as dirty as the Democrats wanted to get to beat him this time, he WON, because for once, the People saw through the best efforts of Jindal's opponents to lie and smear him. For once, to their credit, they recognized a good man, and the absolutely worthless system the Democrats had erected to steal the People's money and their shot at decent governance.

I'm SO PROUD of Louisiana today, and that's something I never thought I'd ever be able to say again.

Sir, I believe Washington state had a Chinese American governor a few years back. So he would be the first Asian to hold the job. Unless you go by the British convention of using Asian to refer to people around India and Pakistan and Oriental to refer to the people in eastern Asia.

Also, I'm not sure if that Chinese American governor was native born or an immigrant. I believe Jindal is an immigrant.

Here we go: Gary Locke, the former governor of Washington. He looks Chinese but he's actually 3rd generation American.

No, but there has been an Italian-Indian to reach a much higher position.

Edit: Or by "American Indian", are you referring to "Native Americans"?

Are you talking about the "power behind the throne"?

Manmohan has said he is going to resign, as per the News on TV.

My respect for Manmohan has soared.

Just like a good leader!

Ray, I think you're missing Dale's sarcastic point.
Jindal is a Republican, elected by Republicans. As the Republicans are often portrayed as racist, the fact that they voted for Jindal puts that lie to rest.

Yes, meaning the people who were there before Columbus. I committed a gaffe in Canada (1977) when I said 'Eskimo' when meaning the tribespeople of the far north. It was quickly pointed out to me that the preferred term is 'Inuit'. It was the first time I had heard that word.

He won't resign. He seems to be getting accustomed to Indian politics, which is basically to say something and do something. I do hope the Congress pushes the Indo-US deal through, if they do, then they have my full support, if not, then they can go to hell with the rest of the Indian opposition parties! Though they have aready gone down in Punjab! Very depressing sir!

Too many terms, they should pick one; anything but "Indian".

He is a native. Born on June 10, 1971 in Baton Rouge in Louisiana. So yes he is "Son of the soil".

All the best to Lousiana and Bobby. He needs to perform now and justify the peoples faith in him.

Ah very good. The local paper did not mention if he's an immigrant, merely an Indian-American. The paper also mentioned the town where his family came from planned a one day celebration.
