I think we can all puff our chests out a little from this wonderful young lady. Let's not forget Major William Chesarek who is the first American to recieve the Distinguished Flying Cross - also in the act of rescuing Michelle Norris's commander.

Pictures here

Especially when news press of US/UK collaboration concentrates on the mistakes that happen in War.

Forgive the little correction execrable, but the DFC was awarded to US flying personnel in WW2.

pdf never underestimate(i'm sure you don't)the importance of the "background r's) in every Regt etc, Your contribution is as important as the frontline Troops. They would'nt get to the front without you guys. In our reunions the REME of yesteryear are always invited, I'm talking of the LAD of 30+yrs ago. The Tankies never forget our friends attached!

Our British officers of my Regiment come all the way from the UK to attend our Regimental Reunions, which are held every five years.

For our Unit Reunions/ Battle Honour Days etc, all our attached personnel are invited.

For weddings, our Unit bands are sent from wherever they are, to play for the wedding reception, apart from sending help to organise the wedding military style!

A great way to maintain and foster our camaraderie.

I don't doubt it. My point was more that as TA I'm less likely to end up at the sharp and pointy end of things (for fairly obvious reasons - I'm never going to be good as the equivalent regular simply because I have less time to learn), as REME my job is to fix stuff rather than kill the enemy, and as a potential officer my job (should I ever get through Sandhurst) would be command & control, rather than fighting.

In terms of actual contribution to the whole I suspect it's quite high - IIRC REME are currently a shortage trade, and there are only about five officers under 40 in my entire Battalion. Still, even if everything goes to plan short of the Russians invading I won't be deployable for another 18 months or so (they don't deploy TA potential officers/officer cadets, and only in exceptional circumstances are you deployed within 12 months of commissioning). So I do kind of feel I'm about as useful as the proverbial chocolate teapot until that time - I'm being paid and doing the training, but until I'm deployable the Army really isn't getting very much back.

Glyn I'll forgive you anytime you ask me - did you look at the linked BBC pages that I posted though?

I'll quote from the BBC page itself -
Quote:
The pilot involved in rescuing Pte Norris's commander received the Distinguished Flying Cross. Major William Chesarek is the first American to get the honour since World War II.

I honestly respect anybody who wears the uniform of their country and especially those who go into harm's way.

However I can't help but contrast this with the bronze star given to Jessica Lynch. I'm sure that subject was covered here some time ago and at length.

I don't fault Jessica in any way and her comment when rescued that she was " a soldier, too" showed that she was a tough gal. However I felt US military jumped on a bandwagon too soon and overreacted.

Maybe I'm too old school but to me a bronze star should really mean more than just a glorified commendation medal.

Bravo to Michelle!!!!!!!
