Powell: Win One for the Gipper

With the 2008 Presidential elections coming up, the debacles of the current administration, and the Republican Party losing touch with the American populace, I strongly believe the US needs a statesman and general in the Oval Office.

Powell has not made any announcements regarding a possible candidacy, but as in the past, there are whispers and strong urgings for Powell to seriously consider a run for the White House. I believe the good general would have the strength and direction necessary to carry America forward into the 21st century.

General Powell... win one for the Gipper.

Don't you think that he has seriously been damaged by being a puppet for Bush? I like Powell, have always liked him, but I believe that he won't be able to be taken seriously at this time.

Debbie you're right, if the Gen. had "gone for it" when he was at his most popular he would have stood a chance. Sadly for the US his time seems to have passed, but never say never!!

I think it would mostly wash.

I don't see how Giuliani can be ruled out if it comes down to him or Obama/Clinton.

I don't think Giuliani could court much support in the South... Powell, on the other hand, could garner a large portion of the electorate that is center-right as well as center-left, as well as most of the military and much of the black vote. I think a Powell ticket would see reduced turnout among Southern conservatives (for whatever reason), but still think he could carry a fair number of the South and North, as well as solidly carrying the mountain states and much of the Midwest. The Northeast and California would likely remain blue states.

The problem with Giuliani is that he can't carry the South (imo)... he's considered a RINO (Republican-In-Name-Only). A southern Democrat would sweep the South. I believe people would see Powell's UN presentation as orchestrated by those above, and it might mostly wash.

I can't get around the fact that Powell's never actually done anything that shows me he's a capable leader. What has he done?

What type of leadership are you referring to? Moral, military... domestic or foreign policy? I would argue that he has better qualifications than George W. Bush.

He can only go on that for so long. Maybe in another four years he can throw his hat in the ring and it might be a good time to do so. As Americans we tend to have a short memory and forgiveness regarding character steps in eventually.

I think dalem means Powell has not demonstrated his ability to be an administrator who can play politics.
