It seems that this thread started to discuss China issues and many of you are really experts on it. I would like to add some points as a Chinese.
How China look at its position in the world:
Chinese social science academy publishes some Chinese development indices every year. An important index is the rank of the comprehensive national capability among the major countries around the world. This index can be looked as an international power ranking from Chinas view.
Economy, science and technology, military, diplomatic ability, government governing ability, human resource and nature resource are the major factors considered in ranking the countries for the comprehensive national capability. It ranks China to be No.6. The top 10 are: USA, UK, Russia, France, Germany, China, Japan, Canada, S. Korea and India.
Sorry, Indians may feel that it ranked India too low. In fact, it ranks USA far ahead of rest of the countries except on nature resource behind Russia and Canada and government governing ability behind Canada. This report gives Canada nearly perfect score (96.9/100) on government governing ability. No. 2 to No. 10 countries are not far apart with each other. They are essentially in the same league.

Another important indices are Chinas First and Second modernization indices. The First modernization index represents the degree of industrialization, which takes the industrialized countries in around 1960 as the standard to be 100 and a statistic model to calculate the index.

The report shows that there is not even one city in mainland China has reached 100 yet. Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau have reached 100 and finished their First modernization. The report predicts that if China can keep its growth rate for another 8 years, China may reach 100 and finish its First modernization at around 2015, which reaches the industrialization degree of developed countries in 1960. In 2003, China ranked 57 among 109 countries in the First modernization index.
The Second modernization index represents the degree of information and knowledge based economy. In 2003, China ranked 59 among 109 countries in the Second modernization index.
In 2003 China ranked 60 among 109 countries for the comprehensive social development index.
We have another report that shows:
In 2001, China lagged from the most advanced 5 countries (USA, UK, France, Germany and Sweden) for over 80 years on social development based on Urbanization, average expected life span and adult literate rate.
In 2001, China lagged from the most advanced 7 countries (USA and other 6 countries) for over 100 years on economic development based on GDP per capital, agriculture working force percentage and other factors.
The conclusion is that China is still an under-developed country and it will take centuries not decades for China to catch up.
