Pakistan Newpaper Will Be Published In India
I am being too lazy as to not type out the story. This story is in the Indian weekly magazine Outlook (Sep 6). Their online would be out next week.
In short, the article states: Najaf Sethi, founder editor of FRIDAY TIMES and of DAILY TIMES (both Pakistani newspapers) is to have an Indian tie up. It is not clear if it will be a weekly or a daily affair. Already two papers in India reproduce colums of his papers. Hugely popular in India are his columns: 1. The Diary of a Social Butterfly. 2. Ittefaqanama. 3. Atalji and Fauji. His venture will be the first such tie up. He however criticised Indian newspapers since most of them have becoming looking like tabloids! I agree that quite a few newspapers are becoing tabloids. I would have loved to post the transcript of the Pak Foreign Minister's interview with some of the media. However, they have nothing on the web. Importantly he said: 1. that the Opposition in Pak was a constraint. (I reckon the same is here). 2. he praised Vajpayee for being bold to start the dialogue which none had dared. (The newspapers commented that he was more comfortable with the NDA govt than with the present govt) 3. that the Hurriyat did not appreciate the opening of the route to bring the two Kashmirs closer. (he said they t9old me to go to hell!) 4. India and Pakistan would continue to seek solution. Bureaucrats are constrained and it has to be a political decision. Hearing him, I realised the immense problems that we citizens of both the countries make to prevent them to find a solution. I enjoyed his frankness. I felt sorry for the Indian and Pakistani politicians.

Awesome. Friday Times really is good. I think it was the 1st one that actually showed guts in criticizing anything that went wrong within the nation, very openly. This was a pioneering step in Pakistani media. The change in Pakistani media has was not subtle it was efforts by papers like his to that made this quick improvement a possibility.
Indian media and tabloids? Press is still about 10 yrs ahead of Pakistan in India. Hmmm well I guess, may be its the whole news explosion syndrome in the Indian media that gives it the tabloid look. As soon as something happens there's Panic panic everywehre. Indian readers ought to write to their editors and point out this flaw. Hype sells, but it shouldn't be compromised with the quality of the papers. I hope Hindustan Times and Dawn follows suit! ToI and Jang (at least the urdu one) are just trash, they've raised their sails doing just the whole tabloid thing. Btw, India is big, where in India would it be available? |
