well said.

Manmohan and Chidambaram(more so Chidambaram with Montek Singh) wanted Indian business houses to either sell their companies to foreigners or merge with them. Again, Indian businessman's resilience got him out. Indian economy's resilience via isolation(some of it can be credited to the much maligned Nehruvianism itself) got all of us out.

If there were no BoP crises(made worse by Indira and Rajiv Gandhi), over rated Manmohan would have been happy with the status quo. To be fair to him, so would have P.V.

If there was no PV there would have been no reforms from any other Congresswalla. But if there was no Manmohan, it would have made little or no impact. P.V. Narasimha Rao would have hired another guy.

In a mob run company, the hatchet man is bad, just as is the accountant, albeit to a lesser degree. Just because the accountant is being compared to the hatchet man doesn't make him an honest accountant much less a statesman.

gilg, Manmohan Singh was appointed by Rao, yes. But to say that the economic transformation is the hands-on work of Rao, that is untrue. Rao knew the country needed economic transformation and so he appointed M.Singh who brought on spending cuts, deregulation, and privatization. Therefore, the architect was Manmohan Singh, not PV Rao. Had, PV Rao chosen someone else, the economy would depend totally on how that finance minister brought on changes in regulation. The economy today is the brainchild of Manmohan Singh, not PV Rao. PV Rao merely chose the architect who was going to shape the Indian economy; and that architect was Manmohan Singh.

How good are intentions to reform without the political will and support. PVN was core to the reforms in the early 90's. Without PVN, Manmohan would be what he is today - a katputli.

I say give it to muslims - give them reservations. If you are already giving caste based reservations, why not religion. I'm already being discriminated against, so I don't really care who gets the benefits. F'it!

Yes, defenitely PV Rao provided the political support, will and made the first steps toward reforms but credit must be given where it is due. PV Rao allowed Manmohan Singh to construct the reforms in the way he did. The economy today is the brainchild of Manmohan Singh; PV Rao saw the vision, Manmohan Singh made it happen.

P.V. is from Congress party. Nobody from the party-in-power(ie. Congress) had the ability(or the will) to usher in economic reforms. Only PV could do it. Chidambaram had the tact to deal with and understand the bureaucracy, which Manmohan did not have.

Manmohan was not an active Congressman. There were and are dime a dozen quality economists/bureaucrats in India. P.V.needed a high quality stenographer-clerk for taking down the reform notes in shorthand and them make an official document out of it. Yes, Manmohan was a damn good clerk, with a doctorate in economics.

And let the OBC's, SC-ST's and mozzies tear each other apart in the process. Nice divide and rule strategy. Heheheheheheheh!

I love reservations - but only on trains and airlines.

I have served in a Scheduled Caste unit and I have seen the reservation system work because I tried to help my jawans when my brother was the Home Secretary in Maharastra.

I have even spoken to Mr Gaval of the Republican Pary of India (Amnedkar's people).

Only the creamy layer of the Schedule Castes bagged the reserved seats!

Seriously, you dont know what those acronyms means? With out that you have been shouting all along to abolish reservations, weird buddy.

They are progressing? Through free hand-outs like reserved seats? If they don't have the facilities then the government should make them. If they can't afford to go to university and college, then government should provide subsidies and financial help. They should be provided with loans. But it makes no sense at all to pre-reserve seats for them.
You dont understand, its not the subsidies and money that will make them literate, do we have the social fabric that is conducive for them to use govt help?? No. Thats why they pre reserve seats for their top performers so atleast they get a fair shot at higher education.

PM’s priority: Muslim development

PM’S VOICE: Manmohan Singh favoured fair share for Muslim minorities.

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/muslims-...m/28055-3.html

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh courted controversy in his address at the National Development Council on Saturday by saying that Muslims should have the first claim on the country's resources.

There's a split down the middle over the Sachar panel's report. Muslims are in such a miserable state that the Prime Minister wants top priority for minority development schemes. At the National Development Council meeting attended by most chief ministers, Manmohan Singh was emphatic.

“We will have to devise innovative plans to ensure that minorities, particularly the Muslim minority, are empowered to share equitably in the fruits of development. They must have the first claim on resources,” Singh said.

The BJP is insisting that some of the Sachar panel's recommendations are divisive. The party is opposed to quotas and benefits on religious grounds.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said, “Poor is poor. Hunger and sickness don't discriminate by caste or creed.”

While Chattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said, “The most deprived in society should benefit. It isn't advisable that people benefit based on their community.”

“Saying only Muslims have the right is dangerous for the unity of India. The country expects better from its Prime Minister,” Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said.

The Government has already drawn up a plan to spend Rs 1800 crore on minority development in the eleventh five-year plan. But the BJP is not convinced. They are lashing out at what they insist is politics of appeasement.

What should have been a number-crunching exercise on the road map to development sounded like a debate on minority appeasement.

And while the PM managed to get his approach right where Muslims are concerned, what he didn't remember is that his road map is not viable as far as the constitution is concerned.

Gilg..we are already becoming dhimmi through the backdoor courtesy the liberals. We pay jizya for Hajj, have special terminals exclusively for that. Now they will come into IITs and IIMs via political clout. Two things will happen soon..recruiters are going to be asking an IITian whether he's SC/ ST directly or if they don't you'll see the brand value of many top class institutions eroding. Messrs Arjun Singh and company don't understand how hard and how much time it takes to create brand value of this sort and how fast it can to erode.

When will the minorities start working?
But then most minorities are pillars of Indian society in one way or another, except one particluar group. Its a shame since they have no derth of talent, just a mental block.

Puddi - the word is actually phuddi or fuddi.

It is a punjabi slang for the the organ located at the anterior of the pubis region in the female anatomy.

Well.... you dont have to look much beyond the current US president heheh..

Jokes apart, educational qualifications are no measure for success in life : Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson. Closer home : Dhirubhai Ambani, Karsenbhai Patel and so on. I am not sayiong they are uneducated, but they have done a whole lot better than those with fancy degrees.
Some of the best run organisations I have had the opportunity to see - Amul, SMGU (Shri mahila gram Udyog Coop ), the mumbai dabbawallahs - are run by uneducated illiterate folks who would have a thing to two to show most corporates with tonnes of MBAs/CAs/Engineers about supply chain, lean manufacturing and JIT.
So lets not knock the uneducated yet.

Anyway, I love this whole quota/reservation debate AND playing the devils advocate in it simply because most people who argue against reservations tend to stand on such shaky grounds.
Personally to me the entire thing seems to be about a mediocre system with a bunch of even more mediocre people moaning over what 'seats' are 'allocated' to thier own tribe. And I used to think that the license raj was over.
