Liberals Cheer Court Action Blocking Partial-Birth Abortion Ban
By Charles Mahaleris
Talon News June 3, 2004 WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Liberal politicians and their allied organizations cheered following the decision of one San Francisco judge to prevent states from implementing the partial-birth abortion ban. U.S. District Court Judge Phyllis Hamilton was lionized by progressive pols and pundits after she ruled on Tuesday that the ban signed by President George W. Bush was unconstitutional. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) praised the judge's actions and went further, calling the law that would have prevented the killing of viable children "extreme" and "misguided." She said on Tuesday, "When President Bush signed the so-called 'Partial-Birth Abortion Ban' into law, he became the first president in history to ban a safe and medically-accepted medical procedure. It was a deliberate attack on reproductive health care and a violation of women's privacy and their right to make their own decisions." Pelosi's comments were echoed by those who support full access to abortions. "We are pleased that the court in San Francisco recognized that this ban is a broad attack on abortion beginning as early as 13 weeks in pregnancy," said Vicki Saporta, National Abortion Federation President and CEO. "Today's ruling underscores the necessity of allowing women and their doctors to make medical decisions free from the interference of politicians." The American Civil Liberties Union was also quick to issue a statement of support. "Today's decision acknowledges what doctors testified, day after day, in all three challenges to the federal abortion ban: this law would interfere with their ability to provide their patients with safe and medically appropriate care after the first trimester," said Louise Melling, Director of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project. The National Organization for Women (NOW) had good things to say about Judge Hamilton and her decision. "I applaud Judge Hamilton for acting in the best interest of women and rejecting a terrible law that infringes on women's rights and criminalizes a safe abortion procedure," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "Women and their doctors must be allowed to make medical decisions that are free from the interference and agendas of politicians." The White House promised to continue the fight. "Partial birth abortion is an abhorrent procedure that must be ended once and for all," the Bush administration said in a statement. "The president strongly disagrees with ... [the] California court ruling, which overturns the overwhelming bipartisan majority in Congress that voted to pass this important legislation," the administration added, "The president is committed to building a culture of life in America and the Administration will take every necessary step to defend this law in the courts."

Abortion is bad enough, this type is quite disturbing.
