The best way I supposed to determine if it's offensive is to use it in a room full of black folks and await a reaction. Chances are pretty good that you'll get one. |

My best friend was born in Nigeria, and lived in West Africa for all but one year of his childhood and highschool years. He's half Dutch, half Swiss, and an American citizen, but considers himself African. Is he an African-American?
I've never been outside the US, I don't look very black, and I certainly don't fit the image of the average black American. If slavery were still in force though, I most certainly would be owned by somebody. Am I an African-American? Dang pc bullcrap. ![]()

Racism is a part of life.
It is best to be indifferent to it...... Or be a master at the language and use syntax that will hit hard and satisy your hurt ego and when the other chap understands what you have said, it will be too late in the day for him! ![]()

I still refuse to call anyone "African American" unless he or his parents were born in Africa. At most, I will refer to someone as a black American. Take Tiger Woods for example. His father was born in the US while his mother was born in Thailand. He's more Asian American than African American. I brought this up to my former manager, who is black, and she was very insulted when I called him Asian American. I have a question. Where do we draw the line? Most African Americans in this country have been here for a few hundred years, probably 7 or 8 generations. Yet they (some, not all) still consider themselves Africans. Here's Tiger Woods, whose mother was Thai born in Thailand, why is he not Asian American? Let's trace every thing back a few hundred thousand years and we are all Africans. Africa is, after all, the cradle of humanity. |

i have an american girlfriend from washington dc.
when she visited me, we traveled a lot of the nearby rhine region. we had plenty of fun and nice conversations. i asked her how to refer to the black american community and what was her wish to be named. sorry i didnt mention that she is black, had studied in strassbourg france, and her grandmother was the first black schoolprincipal in the state of virginia. her father is a buisnissman and vietnam vetran with a purple hard decorartion. she said to me, that the black american community is divided on that matter, some wants to be called african american and some see themselfs as black americans. her personal decision would be neither of both above, but just an american girl. hope to see her soon bichler |

I don't understand what Bush was doing pandering to the likes of Julian Bond. That man has put a big black eye himself on the NAACP with all those controversial remarks he makes. When did Bush ever say that rascism didn't exist anymore? "Acknoweldge"?
