Rs 35.6b paid to retired forces personnel from civilian budget

By Zulfiqar Ghuman

ISLAMABAD: The government paid Rs 35.6 billion to retired armed forces personnel from the civilian budget in the current fiscal year, Finance Secretary Tanveer Agha told the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday.

Agha was replying to queries from committee members regarding the surplus amount in a grant during the fiscal year 2000-01. The committee, chaired by Malik Allahyar Khan, met to review the Finance Ministry’s performance. The meeting will continue till Friday.

The finance secretary told the committee that more than Rs 1 billion was over-spent in one grant because more people than expected retired in the last fiscal year. “Rs 43 billion were allocated for pensions last year, Rs 35.6 billion for retired armed forces personnel and the remaining amount for retired civil institution personnel,” he said.

Our defence personnel are paid from the defence budget.

The Pakistani defence personnel (retired ) are paid from the civilian budget.

This means that the complete defence budget is for pay and for modernisation!

IA is much larger including its retired personnel numbers and when they are paid from the defence budget, it means less for the defence modernisation kitty!
