He's all over the place. Not sure what his point is - numerous stories about fake bombs. but thats just it. Its a fake bomb. I too can get a boat and sail it from France with a suitcase full of marzipan. No problem. Now, should i try to buy some semtex, perhaps my purchase flashes up on more than just a Carrefour cash register.
People misunderstand the "we live in a free society" quote that often accompanies a terrorist incident, it has nothing to do with terrorist motives. What it refers to is that the price you pay for being about to travel freely and quickly is less security. We would be more secure if we had every bag searched and were required to have internal passports, to register with the police in every town we visit. But that isn't what we want.
In this case, just as with 9/11, the intelligence community will be beating itself up that it didn't know, after all 9/11 had warning - 26 Feb 1993.
Since the author brought up the IRA (without acknowledging the political pressure put on successive British governments by "allies" in support of the Republicans). The IRA themselves said it best :-
"When comes to terrorism - the security forces have to be lucky all the time, the terrorist only has to be lucky once".
