Is this so simple? This turd, Green, was a societal problem before he got in the Army; Although his actions could not have been predicted. Remember that he did have buddies with him; they have either been sentenced or got off (basically). Green is a bad dude, no doubt. But it was a group effort. I imagine if any of them had tried to stop it (maybe by telling their SGT), the crimes would have been prevented. They are all guilty as hell. Sadly, they will not all serve the same punishment.
I was in the 101st when this happened and I can tell you that it was an incredible embarrassment for the division.
Where was his leadership? Squad? Platoon? Company? I know that his company (from 2/101) got absolutely destroyed in Baghdad during 05-06. Obviously not an excuse for his and his buddies behavior, but I'm sure it played some role. Green's unit was a classic example of how poor leadership in a COIN environment can get so many Soldiers killed; and spawn residual effects like this. Maybe his leaders share some of the responsibility...I don't know if they were punished or careers ruined. And I'm not talking platoon or company anymore...much higher than that.
