Seven countries link found in 26/11 Mumbai Attacks: Interpol
    8 March, 2009, 6:07 am
ISLAMABAD: Interpol Secretary General Ronald K Noble said Interpol did not receive any report from India on Mumbai attacks adding that Pakistan was cooperating with the Interpol firmly.Addressing a joint press conference here with Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik, he said India should take the lead in the probe in a bid to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

He said links of the seven different countries, including India, were found in the Mumbai terror attacks during the investigation.

“We are trying to help expose the terrorists wherever they are hiding.”

During his three-day stay in Islamabad Ronald met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, Interior Advisor Rehman Malik and the DG Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Tariq Khosa.

Ronald who himself remained top US law enforcer at various positions including Chief of Staff of the Criminal Division, United States Department of Justice showed his confidence in 26/11 probe being carried out by FIA.

Noble added that Pakistan was providing the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) of Mumbai suspects to the Interpol, which would be checked by the global data of the 187 countries maintained by the Interpol.

He said Pakistan understood that unless terrorists-related information was compared against Interpol’s global database and shared among its global network, an international terrorist investigation can never be considered complete and all countries, which are not provided with this vital information, remain at risk.

On the occasion Rehman said India should reply soon on the 30 questions that Pakistan has forwarded relating to the probe.

He said only 13 days were left in the remand of those arrested in Pakistan for alleged involvement in the attacks adding Pakistan has interrogated Zaki ur Rahman and others but India had not provided the most vital information.

26/11: Pak investigators may stop probe
    7 Mar 2009, 2045 hrs IST, PTI

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani investigators have informed the government that they may have to stop their probe into the Mumbai attacks due to lack of
cooperation by authorities in India and several other countries.

The Federal Investigation Agency, which is probing the Mumbai terror attacks, has informed the interior ministry in a letter that it would have custody of some suspects only for a few more days and it was thus imperative to get cooperation from the other countries, Dawn News channel quoted its sources as saying.

The FIA said it "may have to stop further investigations" against the suspects due to the lack of cooperation by India and other countries, the sources said.

There was no immediate word from the interior ministry on the issue.

The investigators told the interior ministry that they had not received the Indian police's chargesheet against Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured for the Mumbai attacks, and other suspects.

There was also no response from the FBI and the intelligence agencies of Spain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia for requests from Pakistan for information related to the terrorists involved in the attacks.

India and Pak already had a joint-mechanism against terrorist organizations; yet the camps in Pak were kept open; so a deep mistrust has grown and I guess the agencies would rather have the threats in sight rather then being driven underground and hence become more deadly. Same thing with the Americans; FBI may not be sharing intelligence with the Pakistani agencies simply because their intelligence agencies, especially he CIA, have already discovered over the years; any info shared means it gets broadcasted to all networks and those networks just get buried even deeper underground.

This while the LeT guys are placed in house arrest. (well i hope they are allowed their morning walks, otherwise i dont know what).

As far as FBI is concerned, they have already through the Indian authorities provided all the locations that the GPSs sets were used in, which has drawn the whole path that the terrorists took. They have confirmed the locations and time of all the satphone conversations (for both ends).

I do not think the FBI could do any other thing, they were helping the indian investigation agencies, not leading the investigations.

As far as the Pakistani investigations are concerned, nothing will come out of them, those that think this will result in anything should grow up and learn the way the world works.
    cheers

links to seven countries may have been found but they will all lead back to operators in Pakistan. Even if there is a link found to US or Europe, the people involved will have Pakistani origin.
Even 9/11 had multi country operatives.

If India had the threats in sight, they could have stopped the attacks. So you're saying now that they do, they won't tell Pakistan how much they know?

Mumbai happened because of the shortcomings of our agencies and authorities. No one acted on information passed on to them.

You're probably right, but that doesn't mean India shouldn't do a proper investigation, does it?
Doesn't mean, they're not doing a proper investigation. They just aren't sharing their findings with Pak. Atleast not yet.

Not possible, try to look at the size of the map and population the attacks can not be prevented in densely populated areas, unless exact actionable intelligence is available, which is never the case, i am sure that there are terror cells in Delhi, Islamabad, Colombo.

In context of the Mumbai attacks, the planning was too damn perfect people who planned this attack knew the sea and security at sea well. However the group in contact with the terrorists in Mumbai is alien to the sea or anything that has to do with the sea.

These group of men who carrier out the attack either captured or were provided with a Indian fishing trawler/boat in advance, utilized inflatable boats to approach land.

This sounds familiar because it resembles a naval special force mission, utilizing stealth at sea by mixing with the local traffic (instead of using say a submarine to approach the coast), utilizing materials available off the market, like the GPS sets, Inflatable boat, motor to power the boat, and it was a well planned assault: the boat trawler went missing a long time before the assault (according to the available records)

The state mechanism for these attacks was looking at the wrong direction, so once they infiltrated the coast, authorities were catching upto them instead of waiting ahead for them. (that and because the police is not assigned the task of dealing at such a level).

Even though this should alert the authorities there is only so much that can happen in a short time, if a similar assault happened today, it will have the chance of being successful (in terms of carrying out a landing) again.

The real result of this incident will be that now the fishing trawlers which will be observed near Indian waters will face very aggressive approach by the navy/coast guard vessel that observes them.

The immense size of the coast line and sea is a huge problem, it is near impossible to secure all of it against such small boat threats.
So you're saying now that they do, they won't tell Pakistan how much they know?
When the DNA evidence is compared with Interpols records they will turn out to be from India or Pakistan, because barring a very few communities most characteristics that are looked for are shared (My dads best friend was born in Karachi). Out side of confirming the parents of the accused DNA is not of much use.

I think the Indian Authorities have provided very actionable information, people who were in contact with the terrorists while they were in Mumbai, information about the motor that was used in the attacks which lead the authorities to a shop in Karachi, information from the GPS set indicating the route it took from Karachi to Mumbai.

Now the problem is what the Pakistani authorities will ask for will be information to prosecute the people involved in Pakistan, while the information India will provide will be to make sure that Pakistan hands the suspects to India.

This will lead nowhere, its a circle.
    cheers
