And this is suprisingly horribly why?
I was rewatching "Live and Let Die" today and it occurred to me that we do the same thing in our entertainment. Bond beds the girl of the baddie so she then becomes the prey of the baddie and her only hope is to work with Bond. Now, granted, it is willing to a stand point, it is of course for the side of good, but how often is the girl left to pay, how many millions do we show that this kind of action is acceptable?
And it is not just entertainment. In Roman history, no woman could be executed who was a virgin. Hence, women were raped before they were executed, regardless of the age.
And it is not just history. Alledgly, we use what I call KGB tactics on people. We make them work for us by forcing an unbearable situation on them. It's our problem but we make it their problem, too. For the KGB, it was direct extortion as in the Beirut hostages. For the good guys, it might be an innocent mistake or a not so innocent that gets turned into work as an informant or face something like $50K fine/50 years.
Granted, one might argue that there is a difference, that with the women of the subject, they had no choice, but with the informants, they are a victim of their actions or carlessness.........but keep in mind that the world works on viewpoints and in certain cultures, if a woman is acting outside what is believed to be proper, then she deserves whatever she gets.
Finally, using women to get past checkpoints, to draw people into the field of fire is a very old trick. Maybe if people learned of this trick, there would be less of a market to use women.
On a side note: Colombia reported that their forces killed the senior woman operative in FARC the other day.

I stand corrected. It may have been a particular section of the populace. I believe I came across the section when I was reading on imperial families and the various fates.

Snow Leopard,
Montaigne in his Essays commented on that Roman practice. According to him, it was an example of bending the law so that ast to violates its spirit. I do not know how accurate his knowledge of Roman customs was, but he was describing the custom as it was understood in Renaissance France.

First thing I must say about this statment is, Its call "WAR" for a reason! Now don't get me wrong its no excuse for it but in EVERY army of every nation there will be soldiers like that. To say it does not happen in any nations army is absurd! I don't need any proof nor will I make any excuse for my nations army. But it is war, and in war there are many casualties! Sad, worng but so true...
