    Obama and Iraq

I'm sure theres already a topic for this but...

How do people think an Obama administration's foreign policy serve the middleeast and in particular Iraq. Both before and after the US troops leave Iraq?

Do you think the Iraqi people will view Obama in a positive light and will Obama be able to help the country stand on it's own two feet?

Now that the election is over, campaign "promises" can bow to reality. Obama's already hedged on the removal of "combat" brigades from Iraq prior to the election, and it won't happen in the 16 month timeline that he proposed as a plank earlier in the election. Also, notice how the rhetoric all along has been about "combat" brigades. What is a "combat" brigade? If the brigade is embedded as advisors across several Iraqi brigades, is it still a "combat" brigade, or assigned temporarily as an "advisory" brigade?

There's plenty of wiggle room, and it is very unlikely in my opinion that the Demcratic Party will place itself into a position where it's seen as weak on defense and responsible for "losing" Iraq given how good conditions are on the ground there today.

I expect that there will be some drawdown of forces, but what we won't see are zero Brigade Combat Teams in Iraq come the summer of 2010.

Well i'm not really sure if i agree with the troops being pulled out even soon after that time line. Apparently while the Iraqi security forces have come a long way since failures such as the desertion of four out of the five brigands in the Battle of Fellujah, they still need the help of the americans.

And while Gen. Patraeus has done wonders for that country with the troop surge and other strategies and the government is now starting to have some influence over the populace, i still think Obama would be wise to recognise that. That being said the gov. of Iraq have negotiated a timeline for their withdrawal with the US. So we'll see.
