    Anatomy of a Firefight

The Hardest Night of Their Lives- Guardian

1 Plt, A Coy. (Grenadier), 2 Bn Mercian Regt. (Worchesters & Foresters) step into hell the night before redeploying back to Camp Bastion and then the world.

This battle took place just south of Garmsir last Sept. 7. The story was done on January 12 of this year. The interactive design lays the battle out well. Sadly, this was an unusually violent contact at close range (5 to 25 meters) at night coming from what was, effectively, an L-shaped ambush.

These young soldiers have my deepest admiration.

An amazing read, really hits home what these guys go through.

    An excellent piece of journalism.

    Interactive

The interviews as part of the interactive presentation are even more raw. A platoon sergeant from 2 Plt. was killed going after the body of a young man from 1 Plt.

Sergeant Lockett took this very, very hard. He showed great composure yet it was clearly on his mind and disturbed him greatly.

Excellent..Yes the guys go through all of this and carry on. I only wish the Government would back them up a lot more. They are thinking of making it an offence to abuse soldiers in uniform. Just thinking about it!!!

My son had to go to Court today, to answer why he had not paid his TV LICENCE whilst serving in Iraq and Afghanistan After a "Chat" with the duty Solicitor about getting the National newspapers involved it was thrown Out of Court.

You would think it was a no brainer wouldn’t you.
Its not often I say this, but lets just copy and paste what they do in the states, they seem to have the right idea!

Still some people know how to treat their service personnel. Local pub where I am is forever throwing welcome home parties for local lads (went especially crazy for one of the sailors who got kidnapped by Iran last year) who come back from tours. I can honestly say the boys don’t have to put their hand in their pocket all night.

I've been told that Luke Cole was awarded the MC because of that action.

Wow!! With what our troops go through, they really don't get the recognition they deserve! My husbands nephew still won't talk about the action he saw when he was in Basra.

"My husbands nephew still won't talk about the action he saw when he was in Basra."

    Southie,

I've real problems with NATO and our command arrangements and commitment by allied forces.

That said, these kids over there, FROM EVERY AND ANY COUNTRY, all deserve our unbridled support. It's shameful to me how we've collectively suggested that the mission is important through their presence but sufficiently unimportant to do what's right by Afghanistan and the young men and women that we've all sent into harm's way.

Damn near breaks my heart. Then to read Dave's comments about his boy reminds you how smugly most reside in blissful ignorance of their sacrifice until politically convenient or threatening. Oh, that solicitor won't challenge a combat vet over a T.V. but you can be assured that he won't be writing a note to his M.P. to support their full funding of necessary kit either.

Down at the platoon level, it's a flat-out war. We saw that in the Korengal articles last January-February and we see it again here from the Guardian. Then you read the comments by posters on the def.pk board and you know their pleasure in the death or wounding of each of our young men and women.

I know who my nation's enemies are and am damn tired of playing the "great game" to hide their duplicity and subterfuge.

This will go on forever as currently practiced. No amount of money will change that so long as Pakistan's, Afghanistan's, and our western leaders believe that accomodation is feasible and, worse, on the cheap. It just isn't.

    We lie to ourselves.

You would think that the soldiers going overseas to fight a war would get a little better treatment. My nephew-in-law tried to cancel his cell phone prior to going to Basra, and was told he would have to pay the "disconnect" fee which was over $150.00. So he asked if there was anyway to not have a bill for the cell phone since he wouldn't be taking it with him and was told NO that he would still have to pay his monthly bill!
