Four British soldiers die in separate attacks in Afghanistan, officials say

LONDON - Four British soldiers have been killed in two separate attacks in southern Afghanistan, Britain's Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

One soldier was killed following a suspected roadside bomb blast Friday during a routine patrol in Sangin, Helmand province. Officials said the commando was taken to a military hospital where he died from his wounds.

Three other soldiers were killed in a second explosion in an area south of Sangin during an operation targeting enemy fighters.

British media reported that a 13-year-old boy was involved in a suicide bomb attack on the three troops.

The Defense Ministry said a child died as a result of the explosion. It could not immediately confirm claims the child was involved in the attack on British forces.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of these brave men who died in the service of their country," said Prime Minister Gordon Brown. "Fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan puts our armed forces in the front line of terrorism."

My thoughts and prayers are also with the families of our fallen soldiers! :(

It saddens me deeply to read that a 13 year old was responsible. :( And also makes me quite mad that children are willing to be suicide bombers.

Disgusting to think, how desperate those bastards must be, to brainwash a 13-year old kid!!

Southie, you cannot say, that children are "willing" to be suicide bombers. It is same as saying, you can't believe that children are "willing" to believe in Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny. That kid was too young to know what he was doing. If all the adults around him were telling him one push of a button would send him to heaven, he was pressing that button; no questions asked.

You're right...wrong choice of words! :( It just upset me that a 13 yo could be brainwashed into something like this! The people that did this to HIM are definitely sick bastards!!!

That's the thing, how are you supposed to fight against that type of warefare. (E.g. DIRTY tactics) :( It certainly is saddening that someone would go to that level, they would involve a 13 year old boy.

The use of children for this is truly tragic, but not unexpected. It was only a matter of time until they resorted to this level, I don't think anyone doubted that.

Its pretty easy: Some songs, some physical activity to burn off excess energy, some skill-building with celebrated milestones, some rites of passage where they are treated more like adults than children, a perceived chance to right some wrongs and fight injustice, group camraderie, a chance to "be tough" and gain approval from the opposite sex, campfires, a little simple philosophy, and some snazzy uniforms. Just like the Scouts used to do. Its classic team-building; once set up, the program practically runs itself.

Its a war. War is brutal. You use what you have. They don't have tanks or GPS-guided bombs dropped by drones. Instead, they have kids. "Brainwashing" really doesn't enter into it; its just a war.

Indeed, to be honest I am surprised that it took this long for this, (use of children in this way), to happen.

Children are exploited all over the world to be used in combat , human shields, suicide bombers. Women, children these COWARDS dont care for humanity at all.

Insulting your enemy certainly has a place in conflict, as a way to perhaps goad him into acting rashly and making a mistake that you can exploit, but at the same time you must be careful not to let your emotions cloud your judgement, or to start believing your own propaganda.

The days when wars were decided by champions who engaged in single, unarmed combat are long gone, if indeed they ever existed. If one side's advantage is found in advanced technology, and another side's advantage is found in its people, is either side cowardly for using their advantage? Of course not. War is about winning. There are cowardly people on every side in every conflict, and brave people, too.
