You wanna say he bought Russian camera?

That would solve the date problem

Let's put this in a nutshell. If anyone can get ahold of an SPS-49 and an SPS-35 (SPS-10 will do) and the Navy has a hold on them, they can be shipped to Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station where we can pick them up later and mount on the ship.

I would bet those arrays are stored on the hanger decks of the carriers in question especially the ones up in Bremerton. I know when we accessed the Hornet's hanger, for the first time in 1995, there were all our arrays sitting there since 1970. Call Bremerton and start the ball rolling as those carriers, when stricken, will be no different than the Navy ships we used at Suisun. Be aware that you may have to pay for transportation since the Navy seems reluctant to pay for that kind of thing now. I know they have offered us retired jets but we need to pay for moving them and that can run us $8000 which is why we opt for operational planes to be flown in to Oakland. Then we tow them on the streets to Alameda in the middle of the night. The last three we received which were the S-3, TA-4J and F-14 were done that way to save us money. We're stuck with helos though. I guess they pay for jet fuel under their training budget...

Technically, the Navy can pay for transportation BUT only to another Naval installation. Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station is just down the road from us and we can haul them up from there. Including every de-nutted 16" shell and powder cannister they can find (I need them for dry ballast up forward).

IMO, Bremerton would best suit your needs since they stored New Jersey and Missouri and is up the coast from you. You have a better chance for the radar antennas with the two carriers instead of one in Philly. If I were you Mr. L. I would get on the horn with the powers that be post haste. If not there then approach Philly. That way the sooner correspondance takes place the sooner you you will know availability and can get them before they take their last trip which imo, chances are they are headed to Brownsville to the torch. Times a ticking.

There is a reason why A/C Carriers which have been sunk, have been sunk in very deep waters. The Cost to actually have one broken up or sunk in home waters is cheap insurance against others having detailed access to construction. Although old, the ships represent considerable accumulated knowledge in construction & process.

Carrier disposal proves a challenge for Navy - Navy Times

Is it me? Seems to be such a sad thing to see the really old warships disappear at the scrappers. On the other hand, they are a lot to maintain as museums and do require a lot of funding for upkeep.

Hey Dread, are you sure that's not the room with the heat exchangers/pumps in? IIRC the SPS-49 use chill water to cool the demineralized water that runs to the electronic units.

(I may have to grab my glasses. The writing on the door looks blurry right now...)

On the FFG 7 class ships there was a long narrow compartment where they jammed in the heat exchangers for the SPS 49. On most of the FFG 7 class ships they referred to that compartment as "The bowling alley."

Yep, Im sure. You would be meaning this compartment for the cooling system.

Considering the thread title....I had to post this!

If it's been posted before, my apologies!
This 6 part series on the USS Franklin ends with videos of the dismantling and the heroic crew watching!
I watched all 6 parts and could not be pulled away!
Now I have to find the full movie on a DVD!
I know that we all share those feelings!

Notice in the video the narrator says that it took 2 years to dismantle the Franklin a 870 foot carrier compared to those soon to go.
