I read something about it recently, when someone here posted a thread about the USS Scorpion, I think it was. The Navy footed the bill for him
I recently saw a show on History Channel regarding how teh whole discovery of the Titanic ws actually acomplished on the tail end of Ballards REAL mission to explore the wrecks of both teh Thresher and Scorpion. I honestly did not know that and its left me feeling pretty silly for not knowing that. Is that some Common knowledge that I have somehow gone through life oblivious to!!!

Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
Abusing Yellow is meant to be a labor of love, not something you sell to the highest bidder.
It was only revealed a few years ago, IIRC Ballard wanted to go after the Titanic but didn't have the funding. But the technology of the ROV's let him sell the project o the Navy, who decided to foot the bill.
Titanic Was Found During Secret Cold War Navy Mission
This will help explain since Titanic lay between the two cold war sub wrecks.
Fortitude.....The strength to persist...The courage to endure.
Actually, it was only a couple of months after the discovery of the Titanic was made public that one of Ballard's fellow scientists blabbed the secret that their actual mission was to inspect the wreckage of the Scorpion in a technical magazine.
So it became "common knowledge" to every Naval shipyard or Marine engineering company that subscribed to that magazine. I don't remember the name of the mag, but it sure got passed around from desk to desk in short order.
Most likely that person was reading the want ads the next day.
Able to leap tall tales in a single groan.
