The problem with that, however, is that as technology advances, old technology dies out. Ask gunnut about how he restores his old computers. Can you imagine finding a 5.25 floppy drive today? The 5.25 inch floppy died out during then 1980's, 30 years ago, and are almost impossible to find. Think about how hard it is to find original parts for a Ford model T. Now take a piece of machinery far more complex, like an F-22 or an M1A1 and try running it on increasingly sparing parts in 200 years from now

Yeah, and how many priceless airframes are lost each year because of private mishaps. This year alone we have a B-17, P51, Spitfire lost.
Unless commercial viability exists, or it can be looked after by a Museum - then ultimately the loss is more heartbreaking than the nostalgia of keeping it in the first instance.

In the case of aircraft, at least, we produce these in quantity. Rather than turn them into soda cans, put 5 of them aside. Between all five, we'd have parts to keep one example airborne for generations.
Failing that, at least maintain some vehicles in a condition where restoration isn't an impossible task, just a difficult one. In other words, don't empty out the guts of the vehicle and turn it into a painted shell. And obviously we don't need it to be able to actually engage in combat and shoot missiles... just get it moving, through the air, water, or ground, for displays, parades, and ceremonies, for civic pride.
For the fans of Old Ironsides, her is a link to some information on her cousin Constellation.

the oldest commissioned warship afloat, in the world.. (the HMS Victory has her beat, but the Victory is in a permanent drydock).
Hey , thanks for sharing these great photos. When I was a kid my dad (who was 21 years USN retired) used to take me and my brother on tours of the Constitution all the time. Shes a beauty. By the way, whats up with the Canadian ship in the harbor, do they visit often? I've seen a few Canadian ships docked near the Constitution at various times. Do they have port call here?
Sorry to Necro this post, but I just saw this one in the news and it's relevant to this thread:
USS Constitution to Set Sail on Sunday, Aug. 19
The USS Constitution will sail into open water under its own power to celebrate Guerriere Day, the day the ship earned its "Old Ironsides" nickname.

Charlestown’s nautical prize, the USS Constitution, will set sail under it own power for the first time in 15 years this weekend.
According to a release from the Constitution’s public affairs officer, the event will begin at roughly 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19. Once the ship makes it to Presidents Road, the release said, the crew will set up the sails, catch the wind and head toward open water.
A crew at Fort Independence on Castle Island will mark the moment with a 21-gun salute. The Constitution is scheduled to return to its pier around 3 p.m.
The ship last sailed in 1997 to celebrate its 200th birthday. This year’s open-water sail will commemorate Guerriere Day. On August 19, 1812, the USS Constitution’s crew spotted the HMS Guerriere, whose crew had already spotted the American ship. The two ships fought, and the Constitution proved that it was the more formidable vessel, with its larger guns and thicker hulls.
As some historians have it, early in the battle, one of the Guerrier’s cannon balls bounced harmlessly off the Constitution’s hull, prompting a crewmember to shout “Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!"

Wish I could be there to see this. Would be one hell of a sight to see and should bring a tear to the eye for anyone who holds this ship dear to their heart.
Some news about it. Short video there also.

Another short video from a helicopter, not much happening. Wind looks a bit light to fill the sails.

She's gorgeous... and ecologically green to boot! The only oil she'd ever burn would be in ships lanterns, and that'd be renewable whale oil.
Maybe that's the answer. Start whaling again. Barrel after barrel of bio-diesel, made from cheap and common plankton!![]()
