I wonder what the chances are of raising a million from "all" the Navy vets out there to save the Rodgers. If the effort was spread across all the Navy and other veteran sites and organizations, I'll bet it would be possible.
Except the rat bastards from BTC, stole lots of money and left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
Its called Tourist Season. So why can't we shoot them?

I know of what you speak! What a fiasco that was!

However, there is a move afoot!
I have been asked to keep certain aspects of it quiet for now, specifically because of that chapter. Let's just say there are discussions being had and an effort underway to save her and bring her home. If it starts to see some light of success I have promised to spread the word over all the mountain tops, sea shores and "forums" to rally support for it's realization!
    So, here's hoping and praying!

Always hurts fund raising folks when donations do not make it to the intended purpose.

Doc, this thread will be awaiting more information!

    USS H. L. Edwards (DD 663)

USS H. L. Edwards (DD 663) has an interesting CD for sale.

USS H L Edwards DD 663 CRUISE BOOK WWII CD RARE US Navy

A couple of recitals from they ship's webpage reminded me of some facts that I had read about earlier but forgotten.

".... They arrived Pearl Harbor on May 8 and took on 24 new crewmen. These were pulled from an alphabetical block and all last names began with “P,” thus becoming known as the “P Boys” for the ship." Sailors awaiting assignment to a ship are rostered in alphabetical order.

Second ".... On May 27th Larry Gellerman’s first enlistment in the Navy was over. He was given a choice of re-enlisting in the Navy for four more years and receiving a bonus of $400 or he could refuse and stay in the Navy anyhow. To him the war was never going to be over and when you are in Honolulu with $400 offered to you, what else? You re-enlist. Some things you may live to regret."

    Never volunteer !

Looks like I erred in the above photo. Although the DD's are lined up 5-4-4-5 ships on either side of the piers, on the top shot they're all Fletchers. On the bottom shot, the two closest are Sumners. Guess two Fletchers were pulled and replaced.

Looking at that beautiful line of ships reminds one that after WW2 we had a huge fleet of reserve ships! Good thing too! Because a number of them were put back into action for Korea and then again a number more for Viet Nam. But, what do we have in "reserve" today! Not much of nothin! That's what! Heaven help us if what history has thrown in our face in past times when we were looking the other way jumps up to bite us again! Less than 280 active ships?? Really?? We, the silent majority of the citizenry should sue the so called leaders of our government for violating their most important responsibility in the Constitution, "defending the nation"! They put us all at risk for what???

We can always rely on the Edwards and the Leary to produce in the tight places....

This recital is contain in the ships citation......

"The remarkable thing about these two ships, and the thing which the originator wishes to emphasize, is that in spite of these long and arduous duties, neither ship has been hit by the enemy, either from ashore, surface or the air. In view of the fact that six of the other ships of the squadron, participating in the same actions, have been hit and damaged, this record cannot he passed off as mere luck. Rather, it is the writer's opinion that this fine record is due to outstanding performance of duty by all officers and men of both ships, and is one of the principal bases for this recommendation. Many of the officers and men have been decorated for their individual acts, but it is the earnest desire of the squadron commander to see every man receive recognition for the outstanding performance mentioned herein."

    Side note:

Lt. Comdr. H.L. Edwards assumed command of destroyer Reuben James 6 April 1940. His ship became the first in the U.S. Navy to be sunk in the Battle of the Atlantic when it was torpedoed by the German submarine U-552 commanded by Kapitainleutnant Erich Topp near Iceland while on convoy duty on 30-31 October 1941.

Ouch..... so much for aerial photos!!!

"This week the captain of the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Miguel Ángel Martínez Hernández, revealed that the ship was dismantled in 2010 and 2011, and that its scrap steel was sent to a smelter in the northern city of Monterrey. Despite a public proclamation in 2010 authorizing demolition, news of the dismantling was kept muted, no doubt in part because of international sensitivities." Source New York Times

The !@#$%^& Mexicans have been lying to the vets in FL for a year!

They had them believing they were going to be able to retrieve her, knowing all the time she was already melted!

Should we have expected anything different?

With all the knowledge and fame of the Flethcher's, how one could be cut up without anyone noticing is of much surprise to me.
