And we haven't touched the Post WW2 FRAM conversions yet![]()
This has possibly become our most impressive WAB ship class study ever - 68 pages - Wow! We may have covered the Iowa class in this much detail, but that is over many threads - this is like a big thick encylopedia on the Fletchers. Thank You!

Its called Tourist Season. So why can't we shoot them?
The thread when created over a year ago was never to have thought to be so popular, obviously the educational and format is of interest to the many that support and contribute.... and there is plenty of material yet to bring to table.
For a ship expected to have only a 4-5 year life expectancy.... these DD's appear to be of interest to many.
NavyDoc has offered that This week on Discovery Channel's "Sons of guns"!
Wednesday at 9PM will have this thread's ship featured...
They have rigged some of the 20mm and 40mm on the USS Kidd with gas and stage an aerial attack!
Should be interesting! //
Anyone here know how to make a video link to the Discovery Channel so that those less fortunate can see the episode , too?![]()
Touring the USS Barry and the USS Kidd while comparing the two DD's brought attention to this little device.....
The Capacitor Probe, important to those trying to determine what electrical charge may be present..... especially in a wet environment.
If anyone can't help out us less fortunate fellows without cable....
we'd like to see the Kidd make noise with her 40mm's on the Sons of Guns show tonight... with a link ???
I agree where the 40mm and the simulated bomb drops are concerned. But, the 20mm left a bit to be desired and I noticed they showed very little of the 5" blanks being fired! I'm sure they would have taken away from the show's contribution! Plus, if they had done it at dusk it would have been a little more impressive! The daylight washed out the muzzle flashes!
I guess we need a few more restored Zero's! It was a bit disturbing to see them firing on aircraft with US markings!![]()
The North Carolina used to have a night show with simulated muzzle flashes, smoke, etc. It was built up by the same company that built a special light show of the Pyramids in Egypt. But it's pretty expensive to run and I don't think either have those attractions anymore.
Darn.

That's what is nice about "functional weapons"! The blanks make a bigger boom than propane! Though those can be pretty pricey as well!
What they really need are the prop designers and special effects experts from the movie studios. In almost every war movie, the very effective looking firing of machine guns are actually operated by compressed air and electricity and don't actually fire blanks. Therefore none of the obvious blank firing adapters (mounted externally on the muzzles) are seen.
One trick that they used (I inspected several M-1 Garands and German Lugers prior to the MGM auction several years ago) had the muzzles drilled and tapped for a plug to be screwed in. There was a small hole in the plug to allow flame and smoke to come out, but offered enough chamber pressure to operate the action while firing blanks -- even right over the camera man.
Simple but very effective.
The SS Lane Victory in San Pedro uses compressed air to "fire" their 20 mm machine guns at attacking aircraft during their summer cruises to Catalinal Island. But their 5'/25 actually fires blanks (or surplus clearing charges) for either visitor effect or for commericals (as in a Budweiser commercial they did several years ago).
