    Yuan B class sub

    just launched in Wuhan

was just launched at Wuhan Shipyard on September 9, 2010. This improved design has been speculated to feature a new sonar system, a new surveillance system (periscope, radar etc.), and a new weapon system (possibly vertically launched long-range AshM from its extended sail?).

It is still a modified MING and nowhere close on par with a KILO. I really do not understand why this is a new class.

Sir, she is mostly defiantely not a Ming/Romeo/Type XXI. She has the teardrop hull and sail shape of the Kilo class and the type 39 Song is 100m/t heavier, the Yaun B type 41 heavier still and might well be double the weight of a Ming. Chinese domestic sources claim the sub which is an improvement over the type 39 has at least some form of AIP which would give it greater range than the Kilo. The hull shows obvious Kilo influences and the electronics are surely either upgraded versions of French kit bought in the 90's or Russian kit China copied and modified from the Klio class subs she bought. Weapons load is surely similar as well. She might be inferior to the Kilo in noise generate and sensors but it won't be by much and she has a longer range. If she has full AIP and at least semi-modern ashm capability she is a serious threat anywhere in Asian waters.

My mistake, I believe the first impression of the YUAN was a modified SOONG and my memory is mixing up the two right now.

If you believe that ONI report, the Yuan is quieter than the Lada but still noisier than the upgraded Kilo (for what that's worth).

Ah...ok. Thanks for solving that mystery for me. I wasn't sure because the tail fins weren't visible in the photo.

    NP, easy mistake.

back to the Ming, does anyone know of any modifed versions of WWII vessels still on active service? The Ming is basically a soviet Romeo (also still in service) version of the Nazi Type XXI U-boat.

The ROCN has two Guppy class submarines, though I think they mostly use them for training.

No problem. North Korea had some Whiskeys and maybe Mings. Though I don't know if those are still operational. The KPA never throws anything away, but I certainly wouldn't want to even go across the harbor in one of those thngs.
