    perfect ship for anti-piracy

just thinking, what would be the perfect ship for anti piracy.. something with a lot of small rounds going down range.. so the USS Atlanta came to mind..

16 5" guns putting out what, 20-30 rounds per bbl per minute..

An Atlanta would be a good mother ship for a fleet of smaller go-fasts and would do a fine job of NGFS for those pesky pirate shore hide outs.

Personally, I say bring back the Pegasus Class. 51+ knots on foils, a 76mm mount and 8 harpoons. N-A-S-T-Y.

Slightly rough on your fuel budget though, turbines arent known for their high MPG rating.

    Over kill on the Atlanta.

Helicopters have proved to be one of the best weapons against pirates.

My C3 concept is for the RN to use for counter drugs/pirate ops around the world. Its got a 76mm gun, and would have 4 .50-cals points

*Hows about a small number of these. Although updated to modern standards. This way after laying to waste the pirate skiffs the mother ship is next with twin 21" torpedoes.

Those small, high speed attack boats would do very well -- except for one thing. They are not trans-oceanic. The need a mother ship to carry them over ant it would need to be well armed as well in case some pirate boats came out from behind a peninsula or seemingly harmless tanker before the small attack boats could be launched.

The helicopter has merit, but only if it is already manned and the rotors turning at idea. Putting one into action with a "cold start" may take too much time and be too late to assist a ship under pirate attack.

Dang! Where is Captain Marvel when you need him? One word - "SHAZAM" - and he's airborne and bullet proof.

And after that, they can have wacky hijinks outwitting their slow witted base CO.

I thought these should be pretty good for anti-piracy patrols:

Shirane class destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helos are more effective against small speed boats than anything else. The Shiranes are hybird helo carrier/ocean going destroyer. They can carry 3 helos, which is 50% more than any other non-carrier vessels.

As stated something that can carry a few helos, possibly UAVs such as Camcopter armed with a couple of LMM.

One class ties with that. Pyotr Velikiy and the "Kirovs" can carry three (PV has already done anti-piracy stuff).

Kirovs are also nuclear powered and weighs in at close to 20,000t. Do you really need to use that to chase down a few speed boats? Think about the expenses. Unless you use cheap Russian conscripts...

I shudder to give Kiwi's credit at the best of times, but I think this could be close to perfect for anti-piracy:

Protector class OPV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
