THANKS for the info. Watching ELSBETH III now off of Monterey Bay heading south with an ETA at the Panama Canal Zone of May 3rd. Hopefully the AIDE will transit tomorrow and I'll get some final web cam grabs of her as she goes through the Miraflores Locks.

True. Just wish they had them installed earlier.

Here's a web cam grab of AIDE going into the Pedro Miguel Locks

A group called "Save the Glacier" is trying at the last minute to prevent GLACIER from heading to Brownsville. Given that we are expecting to see her at Allied Defense at 1100 Pacific Time today (and she is already sold to ESCO Marine) I can't imagine that they have any chance. The Juneau Empire has a story on the effort.

I wish I could find my shots from when I was on the ship but I can't locate them. She was a treasure trove of light fixtures inside her electric shop for us. You got in once you laid some wood along the deck in that area of the ship since it had 2 inches of water all over. The engine rooms were a disaster themselves.

Perhaps a loaded question, but how would you describe her overall condition? She is at the bottom of MARAD's list presently.

Another article in today's Juneau Empire about the Glacier Society still trying to save GLACIER. MARAD argues that the ship has deteriorated too much to be preserved. ESCO Marine wants the government to sell it YELLOWSTONE (AD-41) for $1 in exchange for towing GLACIER to Miami.

I'll use how I score cars for their condition:

#1 Excellent: A close to perfect original or a very well restored vehicle. Generally a body-off restoration, but a well done body-on restoration that has been fully detailed may qualify. The vehicle is stunning to look at and any flaws are trivial and not readily apparent. Everything works as new. All equipment is original, NOS, or excellent quality reproductions. (See show car description in How to Use section.)
#2 Very Good: An extremely presentable vehicle showing minimal wear, or a well restored vehicle. Runs and drives smooth and tight. Needs no mechanical or cosmetic work. All areas (chassis not required) have been fully detailed. Beautiful to look at but clearly below a #1 vehicle.
#3 Good: Presentable inside and out with some signs of wear. Not detailed but very clean. Body should be straight and solid with no apparent rust and absolutely no rust-through anywhere. Shiny, attractive paint but may have evidence of minor fading or checking or other imperfections. Runs and drives well. May need some minor mechanical or cosmetic work but is fully usable and enjoyable as is.
#4 Fair: runs and drives OK but needs work throughout the vehicle. Body shows signs of wear or previous restoration work. Any rust should be minimal and not in any structural areas. Cosmetics, body, and mechanics all need work to some degree.
#5 Poor: In need of complete restoration, but is complete and not a rust bucket beyond repair. May or may not run. Not roadworthy.
Parts or Salvage: Incomplete vehicle most useful for parts. Generally, take 50-60% of the #5 value.

The Glacier is a 5 although she is probably tow worthy. She did have some interesting art work and compartments. I did not look her up before I went on but when I saw something inside I said to Tom "she was a Navy ship in the past?" She does have history. Last note a diesel generator, which belongs to the ship, is sitting on Pier 3 just behind the security brow of the Hornet.

Sounds as if they won't save her then, too bad. Odd that the Glacier Society website stopped being maintained in 2009.

I am sure ESCO would just love that sweet deal trading a 1950s HAZMAT laden ship for a barely used 1980s AD. They paid $3 million for CAPE COD; they'd sure make a big profit on getting YELLOWSTONE for $1.
