    The Carrier

This is another project I'm thinking about doing. It's basically an online play-by-post RPG.

It's set on a fictional Nimitz-class carrier in 1981. The carrier will be named by the players when and if I launch it.

Any ideas for interesting scenarios for this carrier to come up against?

Green Peace units tried to intercept the USS Missouri once when she was coming into Melbourne.

She just kept coming and coming and coming and----

They just got going and going and----.

LOL. Thank you for that marvelous bit of information. What I'd give to see those faces.

How about Nimitz-class carrier group hunts Russian boomers protected by Russian attack subs?

    Great ideas thus far.

Here's one I've been thinking about:

Escape of the Forger- a Soviet pilot decides to defect, but he's being pursued by his fellow pilots.

Clint Eastwood already did a movie something like that. Firefox.

    SH:

Take a look at the series of posts under "Badgers, Buccaneers and Bears" Takes place during a NORLANT deployment by a 3-carrier BG (IKE, Forrestal and Hermes) during 1981. Might give you a couple of ideas

    Thanks.

My initial idea for this first deployment is for CVN-70 (the designation for this carrier, which in RL is that of the Carl Vinson to be deployed to the Med- after some exercises in the Atlantic- where it takes place in the Gulf of Sidra incident, but there's a twist...

Vinson ended up as a West Coast carrier going the long way (via Med and IO IIRC) on her first deployment. Most recently she's returned to Newport News for her re-fueling, the 3rd Nimitz-class to do so, and should be back out in a a couple of years.

Vinson was "my" carrier growing up, as she was born the day after I was.

(Also because she was the newest carrier in the books that I had available to me at the time. )

Which one of these dates do you use:

    Ordered: 5 April 1974
    Laid down: 11 October 1975
    Launched: 15 March 1980
    Commissioned: 13 March 1982

...as was IKE mine. While I have a fair bit of time on many others (most decommissioned and/scrapped or sunk), none match the time I have on IKE. Was my first carrier for first squadron tour (including 347 days underway in 1980) and my last as 'gator.
