    USS Hawaii christened

GROTON, Conn. — New England experienced a touch of the Hawaiian Islands Saturday as the submarine Hawaii was christened at General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard on the Thames River.

Why did the navy stop naming attack subs with cities? I thought states are reserved for capital ships like battleships and boomers. Cities names have traditionally been used to name the more numerous type of major combatants like cruisers and attack subs.

That's because the Navy is now being run by fame seekers to get their name in some non-descript record as having tradition thrown out the porthole.

It's unlikely that there will be a new class of boomers built, at least for the forseeable future...and getting a whole bunch of Senators and Congressmen in your pocket for a vessal after their state is never without it's lucrative rewards.
