You train the way you fight and you fight the way you train. If the enemy fights up to par of our OPFOR, then we're ready. If not, they're meat. Case in point, the Kuwait and Iraq Wars. The Iraqis stood no chance against a force designed to meet the Soviet Army head on ... and the Iraqis ain't the Soviets.

So the Iraqis are not the USSR and in a fight they are bound to lose. They are not even close to the level of the US, Russia or Israel, in supposed order of military power. My point is that when two combatants are at a 'similar' level, being the best on paper does not mean victory though I do take your point about training and esprit de corp other things being equal.
However throw in a few dust storms, a politician putting his oar in and other bits of chaos and very quickly it gets messy. On these columns people, obviously very knowledgeable about military equipment are talking about minor differences of 20-30% but as in my analogy of meeting a smart woman, this is not enough. if the technical edge is so low then this is a real problem.

I am curious. What would it take to defeat a US or NATO force head on?

More then most Navies have in their inventories. Beyond submarines the surface force is unmatchable. Submarine wise you have a better chance against the surface combatants but sub for sub is another story altogether.

People here are also combat veterans who have seen the crap hits the fan. There are limits to what the other side can do based not only on equipment but training, numbers, and terrain. Know those while denying the same to the enemy gives you the edge.

What the training and exercises have taught us the reconnaissance battle (the fight to know as much about the enemy while blinding the enemy to your own assets) is the key tactic. Win the recee battle and you would not lose the fight. At the very least, you can run away at your leisure. More than likely, however, you can hit them where they're not expecting and deliver a crushing blow, even with an inferior force.

No other force outside NATO concentrates so much on the recee battle. It's not in their doctrines. It is in ours and our exercises reflect that. Theirs does not. Their emphasis is still on the meeting engagement.

I mean at ground level. Will a Soviet style army defeat a NATO army head on? Or does it take something else? such as a NATO army versus NATO army?

Sorry Blade, that one I cannot answer. This would be OOE's or a few other gentlemens field. I would certainly have to agree with them based on experience alone.

The Israelis, arguably the most tested Western style mechanized force during the Cold War, were scared crapless when Moscow threatened intervention.

I keep harking about NATO's Parallel History Project. It is the most comprehensive set of cold war documents available. Remember us old dinosaurs have actually sat down and talked about the events taking place.

This being said, I am only aware of one war plan by the Czechs. The rest of the cold war battle plans remain a state secret in Moscow.

Russia and China would a force to be reckoned with. Either Country alone would be a hand full, combined, formidable
