So the Iraqis are not the USSR and in a fight they are bound to lose. They are not even close to the level of the US, Russia or Israel, in supposed order of military power. My point is that when two combatants are at a 'similar' level, being the best on paper does not mean victory though I do take your point about training and esprit de corp other things being equal.
However throw in a few dust storms, a politician putting his oar in and other bits of chaos and very quickly it gets messy. On these columns people, obviously very knowledgeable about military equipment are talking about minor differences of 20-30% but as in my analogy of meeting a smart woman, this is not enough. if the technical edge is so low then this is a real problem.
