Ah, so then the IN has to restrict it's operations to those within range of land based aircover. Well then, that does sort of defeat the purpose of the Indian carriers to begin with...
    Dude Sniper now read Carefully

No, Its not That IN needs to restrict its Operations on based of Aircover. There is a Big Difference in a Sub-Continent secenerio.

In a Sub-Continent when the war brokes out. The Indian Navy main Goal will the to Block the Pakistan just like in 1971, They wont fight against the PAK Amry and Airforce right
After that Defense of India's territorial integrity and maritime interests and Etc etc

The Indian Navy can defend itself without the support of Airforce thanks to the Carrier but still the IAF will Keep an eye over the Navy for sure, Thatz why we brought those Jaguars and Other Aircrafts for. Indian Airforces had Kept a lot Offshore Bases to give close Support wherever the IN Goes.
-The IAF had bases around the Coastal Areas and now we also having Airbases in our Bay of Bengal Islands(Andaman and Nicobar)
-Another plus point is that. Thanks to the Il-78 MKI Refueling tankers we can give some sought of support to IN in Indian Ocean

These Days, Threats are rising and The IAF and IN is having closer co operation between eachother.

The Problem is that Things are Changing a lot, Pakistan is trying to improve the Military standards more Better.
Last time they got YJ-62 missile and painted it Green and gaved a name called Babur and Tommorrow who knows they may get a Supersonic Missile and will named it "Mushi"

Another main Threat for Indian Navy is that. The P-3 is may be easy Target for the Navy Harriers and Shore Based Aircrafts, But What if those P-3 are Surprisingly escorted with Couple of F-16s Falcons and Mirages, Offousre Our Harriers are not that Easy, Indian Harriers are Heavily Upgraded by Israelis but still couldn't give the Guarantee to Defend the Carrier Group Thatz why the Support of Indian Airforce is a Must.

These F-16 with BVR Armaans which are coming from US for so called "War on Terrorism" to shoot those Osama Bin Laden Magic Carpets is a big Headace for India and also not to forget the Harpoons which are usefull against the Osama Bunkers which are hiding inside PAK

After that. More Good Free Technology to Chinese

    Cheers

Not until your ships start sinking i guess...
    Friendly Advice,
Dont put your money on Pakistan Navy(PN). You Dont wanna be Disappointed

HS, that was a great Article Thanks

Now iam not saying my comment is better then that Retd Indian Naval Person. But the Guy Forgot the new Toys and new Strategy of the Indian Navy. He Himself also said the same that the IN can face this P-3 Problem below of the article

The Carrier Battle Group Strategy can solve these Kind of Things. The Indian Navy learn a lot of new Stuff form USN Navy. We had a lot of Exercises on this and in Wartime things will be Different.
They will always be a Couple of Fighters Escorting the Carrier and the main thing is that the IAF and IN first will Hit the Off Shore Bases and then move On

    Cheers

The Air Chief Marshal .. quoted...... ....... Declining to identify the countries from which the country was facing threat, he asserted the threat perception varied from one country to another but IAF was well prepared to meet any challenge. ``Given India's rapid economic growth, threat is perceived from a number of quarters. Without armed force, no country could gain stability,'' he said.

The ACM said that for the IAF but applicable to the IN also.

The company had also purchased industrial premises in Goa for establishing a full-fledged KA-31 helicopter service station. “Three specialists from Kamov are scheduled to arrive in Goa in January (2007) to finalise the layout of the service centre. Specialists have been identified for deputation to India on long-term assignment for undertaking maintenance of the helicopters,” he added. Moreover, critical spares worth Rs 4 crore million have also been stocked at Goa to facilitate quick repairs and to minimise down time.

Besides, some guarantee repairs have also been carried out on the navy’s IL-38 maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

This is not true. Back in April 1972 the USS Sterett (guided missile crusier) was engaged by a styx anti-ship missile, Sterett engaged the missile with a terrier sam and shot it down. This is the first anti-ship missile to be shot down with another missile is war time.
