No need to worry. Clinton will never get an aircraft carrier named after him/her. The Nimitz class is named after people with significant contribution to the navy. Bush Jr. might get one (CVN79).

Personally, I like most of the names the RN give to their warships. The I-class in particular.

Invincible
Illustrious
Irresistible
Implacable
Indefatigable
Inflexible

The "I" class have always been been amongst my favourites because they have such a weight of history behind them - I especially resent "HMS Dragon and HMS Duncan" as frontline warships lol...

I dont understand the USN not using such legendary names like Lexington and Saratoga for their CVNs.... much better imho

Warspite... NOT a name with which you want to mess.

Lexington and Saratoga are both used for Tico cruisers. The class is named after famous battles. There's one named Hue City.

It seems like our ships are named after places or people. Not a lot of "cool" names like the ones in the Royal Navy.

Norman Polmar goes off ranting in the July edition of Proceedings about the hull numerical system being tossed around in the Navy. Example, he doesn't like that the USS Seawolf is SSN-21, nor the USS Connecticut (SSN-22) or USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), because they intrude on the USS Barracuda (SS-21), USS Pickerel (SS-22), and USS Skate (SS-23).

His point is, the DD(X) is a DDG, not a DD, and even if it were a DD it should be DD-998 not DD-1000, but more realistically should be DDG-113, although as he says it will probably be DDG-2000. He then goes off about the LCS, which violates historical perspective regarding L-class ships established in 1968 as Amphibious ships. He wants the LCS to be FFL, which is the traditional symbol for littoral frigate, while my bet is most surface officers would like the LCS turned into the FFG(X) and armed up (requirement creep enter stage left).

As for me, I try not to care about hulls and names, but it seems to me the system does need standards. After all, Independence was the name of an aircraft carrier that served for 39 years, 9 months, and 20 days, and no slouch either. She partisipated in not only the Cuban Missile Crisis, but also Vietnam, was on standby off Crete during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, supported peacekeeping in Lebanon in the 82 and 83, and between those deployments supported Operation Urgent Fury to liberate Grenada in 83, fought in Gulf War I in 90-91, and was the first line of defense when Operation Southern Watch took effect in 1992. Now they give the name to a LCS? What?

In my opinion, the US should have 15 names reserved for Aircraft Carriers alone:

USS Enterprise
USS Hornet
USS Lexington
USS Midway
USS Independence
USS Ranger
USS Langley
USS Yorktown
USS Saratoga
USS Forrestal
USS Oriskany
USS Wasp
USS Coral Sea
USS Leyte Gulf
USS Essex

This type of system would keep politics out of names for the most important ships, if you want to name a ship after a president, Senator, Congressman, Mayor, or City Council member, use the LCS for that.

Yeah - definate shortage of "cool" USN names... I always wondered if we shouldnt name SSBNs more appropriately...

Would agree with that... makes sense to have a pool of names and calling a LCS "Independence" is something of a slap in the face...

The USN has to stop naming carriers after politicians - what next, the USS William (Hilary) Clinton??? the madness must stop lol....

I'd like to see the Carriers get names from distinguished former CVs, like 'Ark Royal' and 'Hermes'.
For the RAN, I'd like the two LHD/Sea Control ships named after distinguished Flag Officers and Generals and the Destroyers named after States with Frigs named after cities and PBs after Rivers. The transports being named after Battles like the Tobruk works for me.
As for the subs, it's a shame they didn't call them AE-11 and the like after our original submarines, some of them led very impressive careers.

Your info is a little off there gunnut

Lexington and Saratoga were carriers, not Ticos. Nothing named for them since the Essex-class carrier and the Forrestal-class carrier, respectively.

The Tico-class does/did include Yorktown and Leyte Gulf however.

And - as usual - there has to be the one black sheep, USS Thomas S. Gates (CG-51)

The last four names have already been given to the new Wasp class assault ships (LHD's). In my last year of employment at LBNSY (1993) I was the design project leader to oversee, recommend and redesign (as necessary) the straightening of the rails and car guides for the six cargo-weapons elevators on the USS Essex (LHD-2). Ingalls did a horrible job installing them. They were so snake-like and out of alignment the elevators could not go faster than jog mode.
