Ok my claim of good looking ships I believe to be true. IMO put them back in the yards and definately rearmor them. They had very good looks and sea keeping albeit and it sounds strange but I understand they were very sloppy in quick turn manuverability. Like TH said and i agree the fast battleships were much more of a match then the Alaska class were for fast escorts to the carriers and certainly better armed and armored. As far as Des Moines class from what I have read and been told they were very dependable and sea capable ships and not under armed for any cruiser class as far as her auto 8" guns go in that era. As a matter of fact I passed Des Moines (ca132) today and she hasnt moved yet but they say she will leave soon probably in spring from philly to her final destination. She's the last 8" gun cruiser afloat outside of Salem if memory serves correct and I certainly will get pics of her to post as shes leaving Philly naval yard. TH with her auto guns and a good refit I wouldnt doubt them wanting her back she still had plenty of potential to escort the Iowas.

With a little luck, USS Edson will also find a home somewhere after being orphaned by the Intrepid museum.

The Milwaukee - USS Des Moines Historic Naval Ship Project has been cancelled. They are now working to bring a destroyer, the USS Edson DD-946 to Milwaukee. However, Tom MacFarlane, one of our Association members, is working with David Henclewski in Florida. David is talking to the powers that be and trying to get a berthing site at either Port Canaveral or Port Jacksonville. Tom is also talking with Dick Caswell of the Milwaukee group to see if the money that was donated to them for the Des Moines can be transferred to the Florida group to help in their efforts. We will keep you updated as we receive information. This is a link with pics etc for Des Moines as she sits today in Philly Naval reserve basin. Apparently she lost her home port support Its a shame they lost her support. She's the last of her kind afloat besides her sister the Salem. If you notice in the pics she's still all there deck guns and all just wasting away without a home I fear that she may end up at the breakers. So now im going to try to get access that much faster to her before she leaves without anyone knowing http://www.ussdesmoines.com/movement.html Last edited by Dreadnought : 10-24-2005 at 13:35 PM. |

I've already been there once, but I sure wouldnt mind a second and even a third trip. Quote:
And bringing Des Moines to the Atlantic coast of Florida is a great idea. I know I'd plan a trip to see her for sure Quote:
Probably she'll be expended in a SINKEX though, which is a much more fitting end for a warship...not dismembered peice by peice and melted down for razor blades... |
