But imagine Samar with these two. Taffy 3 would not have been as naked as it historically was. Of course they may have faced Yamato, in which case they were screwed (something any capital ship in the world would have been to be fair.) But than at Leyte Gulf, a battle it had to win, or die trying the IJN was still too chicken to properly attack a force of tiny carrier. THe two Battlecruisers may well have convinced them not to attack at all.
if taffy 3 ever go against yamato they must be devastated. yamato could easily turn them all into swiss cheese

Ok my claim of good looking ships I believe to be true. IMO put them back in the yards and definately rearmor them. They had very good looks and sea keeping albeit and it sounds strange but I understand they were very sloppy in quick turn manuverability. Like TH said and i agree the fast battleships were much more of a match then the Alaska class were for fast escorts to the carriers and certainly better armed and armored. As far as Des Moines class from what I have read and been told they were very dependable and sea capable ships and not under armed for any cruiser class as far as her auto 8" guns go in that era. As a matter of fact I passed Des Moines (ca132) today and she hasnt moved yet but they say she will leave soon probably in spring from philly to her final destination. She's the last 8" gun cruiser afloat outside of Salem if memory serves correct and I certainly will get pics of her to post as shes leaving Philly naval yard. TH with her auto guns and a good refit I wouldnt doubt them wanting her back she still had plenty of potential to escort the Iowas.

You'd have to shed a lot of weight before you could even think about adding more armo...and even then it probably wouldnt do the job too well. As I understand it, you really can't rearmor a warship. You can add blisters that add tremendously to your torpedo protection....until the enemy flips a modern keel-obliviating fish at you...

What is her final destination anyway? Somehow I don't see her making it to Wisconsin
With a little luck, USS Edson will also find a home somewhere after being orphaned by the Intrepid museum.

TH This is the last update on their website. Ironic that you should say they may find a home for DD Edison because I think they just found one.

The Milwaukee - USS Des Moines Historic Naval Ship Project has been cancelled. They are now working to bring a destroyer, the USS Edson DD-946 to Milwaukee.

However, Tom MacFarlane, one of our Association members, is working with David Henclewski in Florida. David is talking to the powers that be and trying to get a berthing site at either Port Canaveral or Port Jacksonville. Tom is also talking with Dick Caswell of the Milwaukee group to see if the money that was donated to them for the Des Moines can be transferred to the Florida group to help in their efforts.

We will keep you updated as we receive information.

This is a link with pics etc for Des Moines as she sits today in Philly Naval reserve basin. Apparently she lost her home port support
Its a shame they lost her support. She's the last of her kind afloat besides her sister the Salem. If you notice in the pics she's still all there deck guns and all just wasting away without a home I fear that she may end up at the breakers. So now im going to try to get access that much faster to her before she leaves without anyone knowing

Boy I sure hope they make it. It would a real treat to go back home to Chicago and take a drive up to Milwaukee with my family and a certain THL and tour her.
I've already been there once, but I sure wouldnt mind a second and even a third trip.

OK, if I read this right, the same group (or a different group?) is attempting to bring USS Edson to Milwaukee? That would be a terrific idea because she won't run into the same kind of ignorant-minded opposition that a big brute like Des Moines ran into.
And bringing Des Moines to the Atlantic coast of Florida is a great idea. I know I'd plan a trip to see her for sure

Yeah....me too.
Probably she'll be expended in a SINKEX though, which is a much more fitting end for a warship...not dismembered peice by peice and melted down for razor blades...
