India and the United States will conduct a bilateral naval exercise 'Salvex' off Kochi from today focussing on 'diving salvage' operations.

Held as part of the regular 'Malabar' series of bilateral cooperation, the exercise would conclude on September 23, an official release said here on Sunday.

The US naval ship 'USS Safeguard' is participating in this exercise while a naval diving team and INS Matanga would represent the Indian side.

The exercise would include the deployment of combined underwater salvage teams comprising naval divers from both the countries.

'Salvex' is the first combined diving salvage exercise between the US and Indian Navies.

Extensive survey, salvage and diving exercises would be undertaken during the exercise.

The harbour phase of the exercise would include training and professional discussions between the US and the Indian Navy.

The US Navy personnel would also visit the Indian Navy's diving training establishment at Kochi.

Apart from this, the crew of the visiting ship would take part in various sports and social activities.
