They could do a lot worse than name a ship after Rickover. he made teh USN what it is today. it would be even better if they had let him do it his way. The nuke escorts would have had lots more weaponry if it had been up to him. As it was they were emasculated to the point there was no point in building them. You certainly didn't get your money's worth with the few arms they had on board compared to the cost to run them..... and I served on one of those nuke targets..., er, cruisers!!!!!
Revelation 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Is he the one who envisioned an 800 Ship Navy, or was that someone else?

I think there is a Los Angeles class submarine named in honor of Rickover already.

Speaking of Rickover, it brings a poem to mind...

THE NIGHT BEFORE ORSE by Kenny Buercklin

    Twas the night before ORSE
    And all thru the sub,
    Not a watchstander worried
    Not even a nub.

    The officers in the wardroom
    Were banging their heads.
    Thinking of failing filled them
    With dread.

    The C.O. in his stateroom
And the ENG in a trance,
    Had given up, thinking there
    Wasn't a chance.

    When fwd of maneuvering
    There arose such a clatter,
    The ENG came back running
    To investigate the matter.

    Away to the engineroom
    He flew like a breeze,
    Stopped by manuevering
    And started to wheeze.

    The lights from maneuvering
    Were glistening off pipes.
Which gave the boat a luster
    Like a new prototype.

When out of his bloodshot eyes
    He did catch,
    A movement of the aft
    Escape trunk hatch.

As he clutched at his heart
    And was turning around,
    Down the ladder
Admiral Rickover came with a bound.

He was dressed in a wetsuit
From his head to his shoe,
    And the clipboard he held
    Looked just like brand new.

Now scram it, now flood it,
    Some high airborne too!
    Let's run some drills now
    I'm ready; Are you?

    His tight little mouth
    Was drawn like a line.
    His wrinkles were creased
And his white hair like twine.

    His eyes they were narrowed
    His skin was so pale.
    And when he screamed
    He made the instruments fail.

    He spoke no kind words
    But went right to work.
    And told all the watchstanders
    They operated like jerks.

With a spill in the tunnel
And the plant in a scram,
    He reflooded the escape trunk
And out of it he swam.

But we heard him yell out
Before he shut down the lid.
    I passed you, you bastards
    And you're lucky I did.

It's appropriate since he since he was the father of the nuclear navy. SSN 709 the only LA class sub that is not named after a city. The USS Rickover is one the few USN ships that has been named after a living person (quiz time: can you name the others?). Im a submarine fan in case you cant tell

The rest of the Nimitz class? George H. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter... Do those count or only subs?

Yes, I noticed. Were you a bubblehead?

Burke is another correct answer. I think between you and bigross, you guys almost got them all. George H Bush doesnt count yet because its not an official name till the ship is christianed.

Nope, I've never been in any branch of the military. That's actually my dad's boat, U.S.S. George C Marshall SSBN-654. She's probably razor blades now.

Hey Captain C....cool avatar. I used to have some pics of the Pegasus class hydrofoils that I took in Key West many years ago.

If the IDF assigns me to go the Navy, I might desert. I'm not too keen on being on a floating coffin...
