Some submarine questions...
-What was the yield of the Subroc? I have read 5 KT, and 200KT thermonuclear. Which is it? And was it in service to the end of the Cold War? (when the first Bush de-nuked the tactical navy) I had read somewhere long ago that the digital fire control of the Los Angelas class was incompatable, and thus retired early, but never got any info after that. I was suprised to see from one source that it was retired as late as the late 1980's/early 1990's.
-Do the Russians have an equivelant to the Mk-48 ADCAP? How does it compare in speed and range? -What is the opinion of the other Russian submarine weapons? Starfish? Other ASW? Not necessary to recap the old Shkval issue here, that has been beaten to death... -Does the Mk-48 have an insertable nuclear option? (rumor) 60 knots max speed? (less than the 70 kt Spearfish), 20,000 yard range max? -How does the best torp decoy do against the best torps? All that answer, thanks. |

America vs. Russia when it comes to Naval warfare... America will win by a lot! Russian subs vs. American subs: We built our subs just to kill the Russian subs! As for the Subroc, we now use the UUM-125 Sea Lance, but mil/gov says we don't have it anymore. And the Subroc was never fully equiped, the Nuclear warhead wasn't used against ships... underwater. Don't listen to anything else, unless http://www.answers.com/ tells you differently. Answers has some good answers!

No Sea lance. It was long ago canceled(FY 91 request). Yes it was to have a nuclear option. Sea Lance was to supplant SUBROC(retired FY 89) but with the demise of the USSR it lost its main reason for existing.
Its history is abit more convoluted but thats my short answer. On your other questions I chose not to answer for the following reasons as applicable: 1. Some info readily available. 2. Info classified (as you alluded to) 3. Sources of info conflict. Deconfliction can be almost impossible and/or difficult to explain so that people understand the issues w/o becoming unglued. 4. Comparisons can be difficult to make and usually start no-win arguments. 5. The tone of your questions seemed to me to be looking for just such arguments of which I have wearied in my old age. My most humble apologies if I misinterpreted your intentions. The "best" weapons and sensors are those that work as intended by their creators and those employing them. As most weapons have not been fired in anger you have to rely on what are basically press releases that tout how well these efforts work. So in the public domain you wont neccessarily find the truth even if it isnt classified.. For a personal try at comparisons get an edition of Combat Fleets, Janes Fighting Ships and/or Friedmans World Naval Weapons. This site could be helpful: http://www.navweaps.com/ Sorry. |

Sorry Ric, I didn't mean to agitate or start a no win arguement. Truely just curious and looking for any info on the subject. I have had a Combat Fleets, and weyers warships ofthe world, Janes is just to pricy. I also was subscribed on and off to Proceedings and Aviation Week over the last 20 years or so, but never was in military service. Without a conventional Subroc (since all tacnukes are suppose to be off all naval ships) it seems that the Russians have an option our submarines don't whith the SSN15 Starfish. (long range, fast, little warning because it travels out of water the majority of its distance to target and thus does not give away position) Now granted with Russian sub quieting maybe most sub battles will be close range, but it seems our subs had a capability they now don't. |
