yeah India does have a huge modernization plan for their navy. I'm pretty sure construction has already begun on some of the docks to make them large enough to accomadate the naval needs. Also, i heard that they built another naval yard in Cochin i think cuz the one in Bombay was getting too crowded. I still don't know the status of the Indian aircraft carriers which i believe they were making indeginiously.

Let's get back to some reality here.
The TU-22M was never meant to carry a nuke and the Russians are not going to help anyone to arm them with a nuke. They are very strong proponents of the NPT. Second, despite the plans being announced, it is far from certain that India would get all the toys she wanted. The way the politicians play with the defence budgets, it will be a wonder if all these projects can even stay the course. The ARJUN and AJT are mere examples of the frustrations the unifiormed memebership faces when trying to acquire very much needed equipment. Lastly, currently, India can hurt China but China can destroy India. |

Now, on India's plans for a nuclear navy, I was under the impression the Admiral Gorshkov ADS (the new aircraft carrier being built with help from an Italian company....i suspect Signora Gandhi's hand in this) were conventional, not nuke. As for the nuclear subs, I though the Scorpenes from France were conventional, weren't they? Lastly, like Officer of Engineers pointed out, where's the $$ for this? I mean, India's defense budget is something like $13 billion, isn't it? I'd like to see India modernize its navy and acquire or build nuclear-powered ships but I doubt it will happen very quickly.

for defense... pretty good. It won't be like the 1962 Indo-Sino war anywayz.... India makes the most out of what it gets. For example compare the funding of the Japanese space program and the Indian space program. And I have to say India has come a LOOONG way into space. Although the Japanese program got more funding, it didn't really work out too well and in the end they went back to American assistance. A lot of countries come to India to launch sattelites into space. As India charges waaaayyyy less than America or Russia to launch the sattelites into space...

India's defence budget for 2004 was $16.74 billion which was only 2.55% of its GDP. where as Pakistan's defence budget in 2004 was $3.32 billion, which was 5.5% of its GDP. China's 2004 defence budget was for US$25.6 billion, which was 6% of its GDP. If India raises it budget to about 5-6% of its GDP, there is no way Pakistan would be able to compete. It would be just like the 80s when Roanld Reagan increased US defense budget by such a huge amount that USSR wasn't able to keep up and collapsed...
