SnowLeopard, on the 2nd picture you posted, to the right of the ship in dry dock is what looks like a bow section of a ship on a barge. Do you know what that is? Is that a Type 23 in the dry dock?

the bow section is part of a type 45. all the ships in dry dock at Portsmouth (with the exception of HMS Victory!) are type 23's

The submarines picture, what port was that? If it was in England, damn I didn't know that the Trafalgar class was that sleek and long. I always thought it to be short and stubby.

I don't want to sound stupid, but I'm not very familiar with the worlds navy.....but what is the Russian navy like nowadays? I know they were pretty powerful during the cold war. What is it like now in comparison to the rest of the world?

Thanks!!

You can probably find it on Wiki for a quick run down.

Suffice to say it's only a shadow of its former self (Soviet navy). The navy is divided into several fleets, far from each other. The most powerful is probably the Northern fleet. Each fleet has a few destroyers, cruisers, and a few subs.

Most of the old fleet is rusting away at port due to lack of funds. Putin is trying to rebuild at least some of it with the new found energy money.

I think that's the jist of it.

Hazegray hasn't updated in a while, but they have great status of the world's navies as of a few years ago.

Back in grad school my roomie and her bf started to build a rowing scull in our basement. I made a crack about getting it out and they said "Oh no, we checked - the keel barely makes the corner." Then I measured "by eye" as they say and asked "what about after it actually has beam to worry about?"

A flurry of worried glances and tape measuring followed.

And they moved the project to HIS basement.
