It's too bad that NAASCO General Dynamics can't take over the LPD-17 program. The ships in the T-AKE program that GD are building have been delivered ahead of schedule, on budget and fully operational when delivered and accepted by the Navy!

I've read that the LPD-17 program is back on track. Meaning the intial problems and generally poor quality of the intial two examples have been addressed. See Galrahn's "Information Dissemination" site for some details (August 21st blog in particular). To their credit, Northrop Grumman seems to have gotten their act together:

Widespread problems are usually to be expected in the first-of-class, though it seems like the LPD-17's have had more than their share.

Yep. At some point, if we are going to keep fleet numbers up, we are going to have to figure out how to build a ship bigger than a lifeboat for less than one billion dollars.
