trying to I D ships?

I work in Boston down by the water, and everynow and again theres a ship or two (naval) in port right next to were i work.

Is there any place that i could go to to find out what naval ships are in witch ports?

some of the guys at my work seem to think its a new ship here for comissioning??? I somehow dont think so, but i admit, naval affairs are not something i know much about, but it does have me curious.

Oh, and to my untrained eye, it looks like a destroyer or something similar.

You could try the various USN bases' sites. Norfolk has a list on its one.

Or this site:

You can try to remember the general shape of the ship and the pennant number, then go to Photo Archive Main Index and search for the number. You will come across one that matches sooner or later.

walked down and got the name off the back, USS Sampson (DDG 102), to be commissioned in Boston (first time in 5 years)

"The United States Navy will commission it’s first ship in Boston in five years. The USS SAMPSON (DDG102) is set to be commissioned November 3, 2007 at Massport’s Black Falcon Cruise Ship Terminal. According to Senator John F. Kerry, “The USS SAMPSON will be the most technologically advanced warship ever built.” With a crew of 25 officers and 250 enlisted, the Sampson is 511 feet long, 66 feet at its widest point, displaces 9,200 tons of water, and has a top speed in excess of 30 knots. It has a rapid-fire guns and Tomahawk cruise missiles. The Sampson will be the fourth ship in the Navy to be named in honor of Rear Admiral William T. Sampson, all of which have been commissioned in Boston."

You wont find a standard list as to what ship is where and when it will be there. Its security reasoning. Some ships make port visits for pr (weekend events) and others may slip into port for other reasons but they wont post where, and when with exception of what the ships home port is.
