Can a V-22 be used as a AEW

Will the costs be ridiculous? Will it be better than Helicopter solutions that India is using at present ?

I don't think we can operate E-2 from both IAC and Vikramaditya that's why i just want to know your opinion about this idea

this has been discussed in the cvf topic but I think one of the main points is that with the size of the props the hawkeye method would not work

There is at least a conceptual plan for an AEW fit for the Osprey. It proposes what looks like a triangular fixed phased array antenna mounted above the fuselage. The rotors/props are a big problem, but not insurmountable. The cost will be the bigger challenge. Thus the Frogs elected to go with E-2C.

Here's some information about the British MASC project. An AEW Osprey is or was one of the possibilities.

I like the idea of the hybrid carrier with arresting and 1 catapult so that we can use hawkeye.

Commander,

Canuckian here asking for clarification. Frogs here refers to the US Marines, aka Jarheads, and not the French?

Frogs being French. A term of endearment referring to our frog eating allies.

When all is said and done, there is a lot to be said for the inherent capabilities found in the compact/basic E-2 platform that was designed 50-years ago and incrementally improved over time. The biggest advantage is that it as designed from the ground-up solely as an aew platform to hoist a large antenna to 25K-30K ft, a fair distance from the battle group (and stay there for a while) while minimizing the impact of the airframe on the performance of the radar. It is modestly economical from a fuel consumption standpoint (better now with the new props - ditto for vibrations), though admittedly not as much as what a turbofan could provide (including a better dash capabilty) and offers true-360 degree covereage, meaning one needn't compromise one's barrier set-up to account for antenna issues (like lack of coverage ove the nose/tail).

If the E-2D works out as it seems it might, especially the new radar, it will be yet another significant leap in capabilities for ship-board AEW (and shore for that matter) that can not be matched by modifying another platform - V-22 included.

But then again, I'm slightly prejudiced

If they used radar emitter system like what the Brits tried with the AEW version of the Nimrod, it should work, right?

Instead of top-mounted dish, you'd have two, one on the nose, another on the tail, both slaved to each other so that they work in unison.

Or would a side-mounted one like that used on the TR-1 work just as well?

Why would you want to? The reason the AEW Nimrod didn't work lay in a host of mechanical and other issues - two rotating masses at the end of a structural member? Trying to synchronize returns from two antennas? Just doesn't make economical sense, especially since AEW platforms are going to be expensive and complex beasts to begin with. As for side mounted/fixed antennas, you end up with blind spots that force you to a defined station profile, giving up some flexiblity in the process. I suppose if you are looking for a cheap(er) capability and are willing to accept some of the compromises as a result, a set-up like the Israeli Phalcon would work - but keep in mind that they have a very specifc environement and very specific need.

RE: Can a V-22 be used as a AEW

What sort of altitude and radar range do the helo AEW's have?
Considering the problems caused by the props on the V-22 AEW, I wonder if part of the problem could be solved AESA radar? Being able to transmit the signal between the propeller blades, etc.
