I'm sure a computer and software upgrade can increase the number of targets tracked using the same antenna on a Sea King or a new Merlin or NH-90 helicopter.

How about developing a podded solution for carriage underwing on an F-35B?
The hardpoints would likely need a power upgrade. You'd have to have a robust datalink to send everything down to the carrier (e.g. the Israeli CAEW). There isn't a ton of volume. And endurance wouldn't be a strong suit. But it could get higher, faster than any of the other options. And if it was completely podded, you could move it from aircraft to aircraft. A fighter could fly an AEW sortie, then turn around and fly a strike or CAS sortie. This would let you carry more multirole fighters, rather than having to dedicate deck spots to AEW-specific aircraft. With a modern, AESA radar in each pod, and APG-81 covering the front hemisphere, it could perform as well or better than an AEW Merlin. |

Found these on the web
Pic 1 Is a model of what Boeing is actively promoting as a version of the V-22 Osprey fitted with a palletized version of the Thales Cerberus mission system and the Searchwater airborne radar system under the project designation of TOSS. |

Boeing and the USMC are busy with the Boeing TOSS, and the British are busy with Boeing developing an AEW version of the Boeing TOSS. Should fit the bill for AEW. The Osprey should fit the bill for COD. Question remains whether they are affordable and more worthy than a Merlin or Sea King. Of course the Osprey would be larger.
