New Japanese DDH

DDH "13,500 ton" Class
Information Dissemination

The JMSDF is planning on buying at least two of these bad boys. All kinds of ink has been spilled about the PLAN moving into the carrier business and here the Japanese got back in the game with hardly anyone noticing. Pretty funny that they got away with it by calling them destroyers. Although they are only planning on using them to carry helicopters for now, I wonder if there is a possibility that we will see F-35s operating off of these someday(is such a thing even possible?).

people can be pretty liberal about categorizing their ships, the invincible class were considered cruisers for awhile

Well, the Russians call the Kuznetsov an "aircraft-carrying cruiser", because Turkey doesn't let aircraft carriers through the Dardanelles...

The ships are replacements for the Shirane and Haruna class ASW helicopter destroyers. I don't believe the role has changed significantly, although the capabilities will be greater.

Actually, Japan's already got these fellers:

making it CTOL would be good, but i dont like that design, i hate the rounded look to the sides of the deck, and I like the two-island idea

The way that the JMSDF is organized is pretty interesting too. They organize themselves into 4 escort flotillas each of which consists of:

1 DDH
2 DDG (at least one of which will be either Kongo or Atago class Aegis destroyers)
5 DD
8 helicopters
