Question: CV 67 for India
With India facing severe problems with the delievery schdule for both IAC being build at cochin and Russian Gorshkov at Sevmash, Is C 67 John F Kennedy an option for the Indian Navy. Will the US sell it, can IN accomdate it. Is it a realistic choice.
As Far as I see, it is the only carrier up there which is available can made Indian specific before IAC or Gorshkov ever comes online, giving a much a need respite for INS Viraat, the 60 year old pride of India. |

India has just built asia's largest naval Base in karanataka under project seabird, in the place called karwar? But India severely lacks handling such a large vessel, which is atleast 3 times the size of its present carrier. They do have a place to dock it, but can they use it? Why wouldnt the US sell'em, is there a policy or a law, which doesnt let them? While it can sell USS Nashville and USS Trenton, If the Nuclear deal can be passed, why not a non-nuclear Supercarrier. From the Indian Prespective, A CATOBAR of 60,000 to 80,000 tonne's is in their vision of their future navy. The carrier is in good shape and will make a substantial gesture of friendship with ever expanding Indian Naval ties with the USN. With the current Indian naval aviators studying in the USN. I see more common areas than others. But then again it might be my myopic vision. The Indians are in a soup now. With their future subs delayed as well as their carriers. Along with their Artillery and other Army projects as welll as their Airforce Projects. Last edited by Adux : 08-25-2007 at 10:06 AM. |

What would India do with it? Where would the sailors come from? and what would she use for escorts?
Aside from the fact that the JFK is a maintenance wreck that would drain the Indian defense budget, They don't have the planes, personnel, or training to utilize a ship of her size or type. The Nashville and the Trenton are ships that have capabilities that the Indian Navy can use today. The JFK is something they would be able to use effectively in 30-40 years. About the only country that could make use of the JFK would be France. Not a knock on the other Navies but the French Navy is the only Navy other than the US that has ongoing CATOBAR experience. |

GunGrape,
It is just pure wishful thinking on my part, trying to find out from members like you wether it has chance in the relam of reality. Imagine the squadrons of MiG-29K's and F-18 SHornet(MMRCA) on it. The whole point of JFK will be for India to regain its CATOBAR experience, prepare itself for future carriers. If at all Indian Navy has to play along with USA, Australia, Japan in countering China, Indian Navy has to pack the punch in Indian Ocean spectrum. With the speed that is being shown by PLAN, dont you think bold decision of this sort is needed. I do believe Indian Navy has the capacity to use a carrier of this magnititude, while they might have a decent escorts available as soon as Viraat retires. If JFK is available today, Indian Navy will retire the ex-HMS Hermes tommrow. 30-40 years you described, its way off considering the rapidilly expanding Indian Navy. 10-20 would be more like it. Having a carrier is of paramount importance to IN, having such a carrier itself will force IN and GOI to acquire whatever needed to protect it. Now my question, Can the US sell JFK ? Is there any laws which stops them, Does it make sense for US to sell it. What will happen to geo-political situation if JFK comes in Indian Colours. How much more years can JFK be used after a refit. Viraat(Hermes) for 60 years, how long can JFK be used. Last edited by Adux : 08-25-2007 at 12:30 PM. |

Puchase cost is one thing, life-time costs will be considerably more. You haven't got a home port for it, a berth will have to be built, crews will need training and the Navy expanded to cope. Where is the money coming from? Ever thought about asking someone responsible in the IN as to the point of putting all your eggs in one basket?

Sir, I dont know anyone in IN. So please bear with me, all your views quite educating to me, Home port, capable of such a ship would be Karwar, Project Seabird. Asia's largest Naval Port. I am sure India can afford the cost of JFK. But I dont know wether IN can bring up the required trained personell, but dont She have to do it, when by 2011 she will have both Gorshkov and IAC or maybe even ex- Hermes. We are spending 2.4% of the GDP on Defence, quite low especially in comparison to our threat perceptions. IN will have to expand, especially with ever-expanding PLAN. Japanese Premier just mooted a NATO type organisation of the east. |

I think it's just wishful thinking on some Indian civilian part, which may includes politicians, about this grand anti-China alliance. There won't be such a thing. If Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan - the three countries most affected by China cannot get together in an alliance, than any Indian participation is a moot point.
