Well, first off, it's written Chinese, not written Mandarin. There is no such thing as written Mandarin. It's the same written language regardless of what Chinese dialet you speak.

2nd, once I saw one of the links was to the centurychina.com, I didn't even bother looking at the rest until now. Centurychina.com is the home of the Chinese Military Forum, probably the largest English internet warrior forums out there.

Talk about irony, I just found that out today.

I was reading Guns, Germs and Steel on my lunch hour at the bar and grill next door to my work.

Back to the banner, I wonder what it really says.

What did you think of the book (Guns, Germs and Steel)? I found it interesting but the wife said it was "pompous". I of course missed the TV showing.

I found this picture from Chinese forum giving good summary.

Looking at this I think that Chinese PLN are realistic people and do not plan to challenge USA domination which it has built for few decades.... with few years. Probably PLN needs carriers to become an undoubtfully regional superpower!

"Pompous" is not a totally unfair way of describing I guess, depending on your perspective.
I've enjoyed it, and I've certainly learned quite a bit about things other than military-related stuff.

Good diagram, though I've seen it on Global Security.org, probably where that Chinese forum got it.

It's also a tad bit out of date now, what with a few decommisionings here and there.
Overall it does give a good comparison between the various other countrys besides the United States.

China is not trying to equal the Americans in anyway. It can't. If it's building a carrier, it's more for giving itself more option to operate a little further out and also for nationalistic reasons rather than anything else.

They are definitely status symbols of the conventional forces set that is concerned about "image". Much like battleships were earlier in the 20th Century.

USN is trying to maintain 12 carrier groups and 12 amphibious groups. But looks like the JFK will be retired prematurely: http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/...-jfk/index.php

For comparison, here is a list of current USN ship building contracts: http://www.coltoncompany.com/shipbld...government.htm

By the way, looking at that picture of 12 US super carriers, does that old TV show (not the new one, the new one is a pussified version) Battlestar Galactica jump into mind?

The new Galactica would own that old plastic junk heap any day of the week.
