Blast damages Russian sub
Blast damages Russian submarine
An explosion has damaged a Russian naval submarine undergoing repairs in the Arctic, but there are no reports of any casualties, Russian media say. Officials have not specified whether the submarine is nuclear-powered. The background radiation level is normal in Severodvinsk, where the incident took place on Thursday, Interfax news agency reports. The explosion damaged more than 20sq m (215sq ft) of the submarine's hull, Ekho Moskvy radio reports. The russian papers say she was a nuke boat assigned the white fleet, still haven't found a name.
The english reports I've seen lack details, but according to the Russian papers it looks like a ballast exploded due to pressure while the sub was in dry dock. The shipyard claims it was human error. Depending upon how long the sub is in the yard, it is possible the reactor was removed for the work. For long yard periods that was a common practice when the submarine was in for the yard for several months. |
