Question: If the French are getting in on this, are they going to pay for half the R+D and the additional cost to fit this out for their needs?
Also why are they getting the middle of the three? Wouldn't it make more sense to build the 2 that are identical first? |

The French are paying a fixed fee for the design (IIRC £100 million) plus the cost of any additional design work for their needs. As for the middle carrier, they need it more than we do and IIRC current plans mean that their build schedule doesn't impact on ours anyway.

Does the fact that French is also ordering one, therefore boosting the build number by 50%, lower the per unit cost?

That's the reason for the latest round of delays in the programme - the government are trying to force VT and BAE Systems to drop a few hundred million pounds from the price on the grounds that an extra carrier is being ordered. Given the current build strategy to build all the UK sections in the UK and French sections in France, they aren't having a great deal of success. IMHO the only price break will come from long lead time big ticket items like engines, rather than the ship construction itself.

the chances of an order being made this week are starting ot look very good, the times is reporting that Brown will announce a 30 billion spending programme for the military this week, including orders for CVF, the fact that this article is linked to from the RN website, coupled with the dim report in the same article the T45 units 7 and 8 are permanently canceled makes it look like this could very well be genuine.
(note: do note mistake this post for optimism, im expecting a CVF order about as much as im expecting headless chickens piloting Typhoons. |

Brown or Browne - Swiss Tony our part-time Defence minister or the **** of a scotsman we currently have as Prime Minister? I can just about believe that Gordon Brown will order CV(F) on the grounds that it would be built in his constituency. Des Browne however will probably try to cancel it just to get a gold star from the treasury for having a smaller budget request - so far as I can tell he doesn't give a stuff for the armed services.
