ESSM is Sparrow in name only.

It is an all new missile with tremendous Mach 4+ 30 nautical mile range performance achieved via an all-new vectored thrust rocket motor.

It's state of the art.

It is also supplemented by RAM, which is an autonomous fire and forget dual-mode point defense missile that scored a 95+% success rate during acceptance trials.

SM-2MR Block IIIB(current standard) is also a very capable vectored thrust SAM, with dual mode SARH and IR terminal seeking.

Within the electronic horizon, USN ships are VERY well protected.
