The significance of the 1997 date is that is when New Labour became the government. IF the Tories win the next election they are going to have to spend serious amounts of money to rectify the many shortages of equipment and manpower. Should the Liberal Democrats win we can forget it altogether. We could be heading to Banana Republic status, and we haven't even got bananas.

i have to say i somewhat disagree with the above article, it blames cooperation with Europe for the navies demise, but i disagree.
Just look at the French navy, right now its about level(perhaps slightly better) than the royal navy. But by the middle of next decade they will have a new conventional aircraft carrier, and 21 brand new escorts (4 horizon, 17 FREMM) and 1/2 a dozen new nuclear subs. Combined with the Charles de Gaulle, the two Mistral class units, and the 11 frigates of the La Fayette and Floreal classes (thought the latter may be paid off) this gives the French a strong respectable fleet by the middle of the next decade, while the UK will have the naval strength of a floating bucket Last edited by Dectilion : 01-18-2007 at 17:39 PM. |
