Tango Bravo R&D Project to Drive Down Sub Size

Quote:
The Navy and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) plan to pour $97 million between 2004-2009 into a new joint project known as Tango Bravo, intended to lead to the design of a new attack submarine that would have all the capabilities of the current Virginia Class boats, but at half the size and half the build cost. As a comparison, SSN-774 Virginia Class attack submarines are 377 feet in length, and have a 34-foot beam. They cost approximately $2.0-2.5 billion each.

Interesting read however i doubt this sub will ever get to the USN.

I think you are correct. A sub half the size, greater automation, small crew size will be good for cruises of a month or so but, diffinitely not three months as current SSNs. A sub that small would be just like the French Rubis Class subs. A displacement of 2,670 tons, dimensions of 73.6 x 7.6 x 6.4 meters (241 x 25 x 21 feet).
Now a small nuclear reactor could be made but, what advantage would it have over the new AIP technologies?
True, cost is a function of size but, the economics of the USA translates into the relative cost of today will be a lot higher by 2010 and later. By that time period Congress will 'balk' at spending that amount of money when the sub will not have the capabilities of the USS Virginia. The new sub will be slower, carry less weapons, less time on patrol, etc. This sub could not be based in the USA because it is too far away from "areas of interest".
Ad the 'not invented here mentality' and I don't see it remaining simple and inexpensive. The US Military did not like the F-5 or F-20 fighters. To simple, not enough capabilities compared to many other fighters. The same will happen to this sub.
