Well, of course I remember all four of the Iowa class Battleships I worked on and went to sea on two of them. And I also remember the names of most of the Aircraft Carriers I worked on. Let's see now, they just converted over from bi-wings to monoplanes and ---------------. |

I was just checking to see if you were still in town and checking the boards.....
I used the LBNSY drydock list to get a list of names, but there were also the Limited Availabilities and the weekenders on Piers 9, 15, and 16. Last edited by RAL's_pal? : 09-24-2006 at 19:02 PM. |

The Dry Dock database would certainly name most of the ships we worked on, but only those that were dry docked. We also worked on a lot of ships that were strictly pierside. Such as this listing from my Appenix B: OTHER BATTLESHIP AVAILABILITY’S (PIERSIDE ONLY – NO DRY DOCKING): USS Mississippi (BB-41) 1945 USS Maryland (BB-46) 1945 USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) 1945 USS Nevada (BB-36) 1946 (Prepared for Bikini Atomic tests) USS Wisconsin (BB-64) 04/19/52 09/23/53 04/14/54 As opposed to Dry Dock availabiilities: BATTLESHIPS: (All in Dry Dock 1) USS Nevada (BB-36) 02/23/43 to 03/15/43 (1) 12/02/45 to 12/07/45 USS West Virginia (BB-48) 08/30/44 to 09/06/44 USS California (BB-44) 05/03/45 to 05/05/45 USS Texas (BB-35) 12/08/45 to 12/12/45 USS Iowa (BB-61) 12/16/45 to 12/22/45 USS Arkansas (BB-33) 02/04/46 to 02/06/46 (Prepared for Bikini Atomic tests) USS New Jersey (BB-62) 11/18/81 to 03/13/82 (Reactivation and Modernization) 03/09/87 to 08/29/87 (Hull repairs with two “bumps”) 08/23/90 to 11/13/90 (Inactivation) (2) USS Missouri (BB-63) 08/11/84 to 03/23/85 (Reactivation and Modernization) 02/03/89 to 04/25/89 (Hull modifications) (1) First docking of a Battleship at LBNSY (2) Last docking of a Battleship at LBNSY |

I was just going through the drydocking sheet to see the carriers and that's a nice group of names. I'm surprised not to see the Intrepid's name. I have a 1959 picture of the Intrepid apparently moored just south of Pier 9. Pier 9 has the MSO's tied up and the Intrepid is just past them.

It would be far too long anyway especially if I included Helicopter Carriers such as LPH's and LHA's. |

There were a lot of escort carriers that were drydocked. I have some negatives of the CVE's.
I see they were drydocked in all 3 drydocks. One shot I have is from one in DD 2. It would take too much work to put these on poster boards and haul them around to functions like........ picnics, for example.... besides I'd never have the patience to stand by a display to keep an eye on it. Wait a minute. If we were living in California then, I could have been on those ships during open houses. So I am that old but in Milwaukee then. |

The picnic this Saturday will be my last showing. Then after I come back from Vallejo I will be hauling them over to the Navy Golf Course in Cypress to decorate their new Long Beach Naval Complex banquet room. I also have about 20 ship's plaques that I will be giving them also for general decoration of the bar area. Small memorabilia I have to hang onto for now as the Golf Course display areas wont have flat table displays for matchbooks, post cards, crew rosters, red car tokens, etc. |
